PCOM (Philadelphia) Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You can also look around for houses that are being rented.

I live in a house behind Beekman with two roommates--we each only pay 420/month. I know there are places available in the area.

Manayunk is another good option for those who don't mind having parking issues, want proximity to school, bars, restaurants, and want something cheap.

God help you if you want to get out/in when there's traffic, though. Few times I've had to go over to Roxborough have been a nightmare.

Well that's Philly for ya. The nightmare traffic does not strictly apply to Manayunk.

Plus, there are shortcuts/back roads in and out of manayunk to city ave 😉

Anyone know when the committee is meeting next?
I know I was told that they will be sending letters by Feb. 15th, but looking on here, it looks like many are getting letters in the second week of the month. I am so hopeful that I will be getting an acceptance too. Did you or anyone else here interview on Jan. 26th? Good luck!!

I interviewed about 2 weeks before you.. They told us we'd hear within a month, so I was just trying to figure out when to really anticipate checking the mail  Fingers crossed to everyone waiting!

Anyone know when the committee is meeting next?

Tomorrow morning, with letters in the mail by Wed/Thurs... so start your compulsive stalking of the mail carrier Saturday for the Phila area, and Monday elsewhere... until then, relax. 🙂

Sailing41 - how do you know when the adcom meets? Hope you're right, would love to know sooner rather than later of course.

Also, anyone know how to get in touch with Josh the Marine who interviewed with me on Jan 23rd?

Woo! Thanks! And yes.. I will *start* compulsively stalking the mail carrier because... I didn't do that before or anything 😉

Thank you so much for letting me know this as well. I am hopeful for an acceptance letter. Definitely the place I want to be!!!! One week of anticipation is better than three....now on to stalking the mail carrier also 🙂

Do you think PCOM is still offering interviews? I sent my secondary in early December and haven't heard from them yet.

Also, what is the best way to ask the admissions staff questions you have about the program? Through email or phone?

I believe so. I received an email invite last week and have one set up for Feb 13th. Its definitely late, but better than never.

At my interview, they specially say that they only invite people to interview if they still have spots available -- they don't interview strictly for the waitlist, so late or not, you still have a good chance. Congrats on the invite and good luck! 🙂

Advice from a first year. Figure out how you study. Whether it is by taking notes on the computer or by hand.. reading. Ect.. because a lot of time is wasted the first few weeks by a lot of students .. just trying to figure out which method is best. Just ponder it 🙂

I find that taking notes on the computer is efficient for me .. because they talk so fast in class. It is not for everyone. Just familiarize yourself with possibly doing notes on the computer .. I am technologically challenged .. so I had to learn a lot about the computer programs.. which in my opinion could have been avoided 🙂 just a thought.

Appreciate the advice!

Just don't go to class. Wait for tegrity..then you can double speed it or pause or rewind or whatever your heart desires. Get scribe notes so you make sure not to miss anything. My grades went up after not going to class, my stress level went down, and I wake up when I want to, go to the gym when I want to, and pretty much dictate my own schedule. I'm happy 🙂

There are plenty of ways to network yourself with professors outside of the classroom.

That is also a great idea. I tried it and missed seeing people all day .. it is really personal preference. My friend does it and does really well , but he also said he is a bit lonely. Do what works for you

So I was interviewed this past Thursday
And I was thinking about sending a thank you letter to them.
But....I dont remember the guy's name nor where to send it too.
Should I not send it? or should I write a general letter to admissions office?

I only remember the name of the guy who did the tour for us

You could call the office and just be polite and ask. It's not the end of the world if you don't remember everything. However, I think it's always nice to send one.

Is the gesture nice, absolutely! Do I think it makes a difference (in regards to acceptance status), no.

So letters arrived around the Philly region today. They were dated Feb 2nd. Unfortunately it was not an outright acceptance, but rather a delay of decision until a later time. The letter mentions all notification will be mailed no later than April 24th, but I would really love to know sooner. Hope they decide to accept me. Does anyone know if this is preferential to being put on the wait list?

Unfortunately a lot of the spots are filled by now, so usually towards February they hand out a lot of delays until they interview the rest of the applicants. It's better than wait list because it means they are still interested, but just need more time to reach their decision.

Thank you for letting me know this. I suppose it wouldn't hurt, and might even be beneficial to reach out to the committee to express my interest in matriculating. I have my fingers crossed for sure!

So, are there 3 types of letters then? Accepted, Rejected, or Delayed?

I also got the delay letter. Bummed.

Letters for 1/25 interviews just got in here on the west coast!

Any good news or more delays of decision?

I also received the delayed decision letter. Also super bummed... PCOM is my #1. Any one know what our chances are?

I could be wrong, but isn't financial aid stuff due on March 31? What happens if we don't hear until late April?

I can't say that they haven't offered outright acceptances, but a delay of the decision still means we have a shot at admission for the Class of 2016. Love this place, and hopefully they will send me that letter (if anyone from adcoms is reading this) sooner than later. My best guess is that there are fewer seats and since relatively few people interview each week, they may wish to evaluate more applicants at the same time. As far as the financial aid stuff, the deposit of $2000 is due April 15th. This is after the $250 to secure the seat. I would imagine that if the decision comes after that point, then it would need to be send immediately. Just my opinion, and maybe someone that is currently there can confirm or clarify?

Glancing at some of the old threads, I saw that many of those who originally had a delayed decision were subsequently accepted after the late April date. It seems like as the interview season progresses they (PCOM adcom) are even more selective about who they offer acceptances to, so a majority of the applicants get the delayed decision. Of course, this is only what I was able to gather from stalking some of the old threads, so take it with a grain of salt, but I think it means we're definitely still in the game! 🙂

I too have looked at some of those threads, and in the process think that we are driving ourselves crazy. Aside from that, I am hopeful that we will have our acceptances soon. It does also seem that the adcom has been meeting more frequently than once per month, so maybe they just want to wait until they have a stack of interviewees to evaluate at once? Having to wait until late April is definitely not ideal, but we all signed up for this journey...

Totally agree. 😛 Unfortunately, I'm not hopeful that we'll hear anytime soon. I think we're going to be waiting until the end of April like they said in the letter, or at least until they've finished interviewing. I'm basing this off what I read in the old threads, though. (haha) But, if we keep thinking that we'll hear at the end of April and get a letter in the mail sooner, we'll just be pleasantly surprised.

Here's to the good 'ol hurry up and wait game! :xf:

Agreed! This is what we signed up for. Luckily I do have other interviews coming up, so at least there is some comfort there, but an acceptance at PCOM would make my day...make that year!!!!

Good for you -- I hope you rock them!! 🙂 Are they schools close by? I am waiting to hear back from two other schools post-interview (3 if you include PCOM), and I'm about to cancel another interview for a school I'm not really interested in -- I already have an acceptance, which is the only reason I'm doing that. haha. But I agree, I would be absolutely thrilled to get into PCOM. I got such a great vibe from the school on my interview day. :xf:

All this waiting is going to drive me crazzyyyy though. :scared:

It sounds like we are in the same boat, I will be sending you a PM for the sake of not having all our info out there for the world to see.

Interviewed 1.23 - just got acceptance letter today (2.6)!!
Pumped as eff (wasn't sure they would accept a guy with a beard).
Anyone else who interviewed 1.23?!

Thanks to all who post to this site, as we all know, it's an unbelievable place to show/receive support - so hang in there for those still waiting!

Big ups to R1MD, UGA2008, Rollo, DrRedhead, HDaddyDollarz, and Bacchus.

Moving to Philly from Chicago ASAP, so would love to meet up with yall (and any other SDN.ers) in real life at some point!
