Anyone have any idea why a PD would contact me and asked me if I matched. Isn't that really shady? I thought that was illegal.

Yes, it is a match violation apparently. Were any of the places you interviewed among those with unfilled spots? Maybe he wanted to sign you in the scramble...?

I don't think it's a match violation if the match has already occurred. I may be wrong on that though. I was contacted by a couple of PDs after the match (a few years ago) and they asked why I didn't pick them, etc. I think that was well after the match though, a week or two at least.
Matched candidates and programs are not supposed to contact each other between Monday and Thursday. Hey, I don't make the rules. If it were up to me, I'd have them tell us where we matched on Monday, and eliminate this silly wait.

I got similar contact last year, although it was typically in the form of a letter, or online survey (!).
I would wager that if a PD calls you and asks if you matched or not they do not think very highly of you.

If they thought that they would have ranked the OP and not failed to fill their class. If the OP did not even bother to rank the program why would they go there?
This is all conjecture. However, they may not have even interviewed the OP. He/she may have been the next alternate on their interview list or the OP may have turned down an interview from that program. I imagine interviewees may second guess not ranking a program if they did not match.
I am curious - Why would a program call someone on a scramble day to check if they didn't match if they didn't think highly of him as a candidate?
Do PDs really think "Geez! this guy stinks, I wonder if he even matched. Hey, Bob - I bet you lunch scurred didn't match. You are on, I am calling him right now to find out."
I guess it is possible?

PDs don't have that kind of time, especially if they have to scramble to fill. They probably called because they had the impression from the candidate that they were going to be ranked highly by said candidate, and were confused by the match results.
This happened to me (sort of), I liked a program well enough for a second look but in the interval between the visit and the ROL certification a death in the family made me rearrange priorities. When I ended up elsewhere they called the PD at my medical school's program to get the skinny.
I agree - I was wondering why a PD would contact a candidate they didn't think highly of? A free lunch is all I could think of.
I'm guessing it's because I didn't match there and they figured I would and they had an open spot. That's just my theory though. Which makes me think also that I matched above them
