Hi everyone,
I was looking at buying a PDA for use during medical school next year. I was wondering if any pre-allo. or medical students had the, and if you do which ones do you have/recommend. While relatively technologically savvy, I know very little about PDA's. Any information you could provide would be very helpful. Thanks🙂

Don't need one.

Use a moleskin notebook instead.

It's handy AND classy.

I don't know a whole lot about them, but I like my Dell Axim 51v alright. I don't know if my handwriting just sucks or what, but it doesn't do a good job recognizing it. Personally, I prefer the keyboard anyway though, so it doesn't really matter. It also has bluetooth and WiFi, so you could use it to sync up contacts with your phone or surf when you don't have a laptop. What exactly do you need it for? Most of the physicians' tools for PDAs probably won't be useful to you during the preclinical years, I'd imagine. By the time you get to the 3rd year, anything you have will be obsolete.

Agreed. Don't buy until you need to. Prices will be cheaper 3 years from now, and all new devices will be on the market. Also, I think some med schools require you to buy a specific PDA or a specific brand of PDA (i.e. Dell)...

I'm asking for a Pocket PC, probably from Dell... my boyfriend's doing the research, so I'm sure it'll be okay. I like the Pocket PC better than the Palm because it has more options... it has a lot of nice Windows features and the handwriting feature works better.

Do the pocket pc's and the smartphones have all the usual PDA stuff?

I know the Pocket PC's I'm looking at do.

My sister and brother-in-law, both newly minted physicians, second this. They told me not to get anything until my third year because I absolutely won't need it and will be spending a lot of money unnecessarily.

I wholeheartedly agree with this post. I really really want a PDA but am resisting until 3rd year so I can have one that is super up to date. My ipod is going on 3 years old and looks like it came out of the stone ages, and I don't want to have a stone age PDA when I'm actually goint to utilize it for more than a glorified address book. That being said, if you really really must get one now, I've been told that there is far more medical type software available for the Palm OS vs Pocket PC OS. Just a heads-up.

Does anyone know which schools require certain PDAs?
