I'm finishing up 2nd yr and thinking about getting a PDA or PDA/cell phone.

Any advice?
thanks-

there are some really nice ones out there but they are pricey. but i would say only get one if you already use a PDA for your day to day stuff and not if you plan on buying just for 3rd year. i dont use my pda as much as i thought in third year...

I had a Sony Clie - absolutely loved it but, recently it took a dump.

I was in need of a new cell phone and was able to sign a new contract with Verizon, so I could get a new phone at the promo price. I decided to get the XV6700 and have to say I LOVE it! I would definitely go with a PDA/cell combo b/c it is just that much less you have to carry around in your pockets.

I also recommend getting an extended warranty for whatever you buy b/c these things take a beating and can break down quite frequently!

very nice. I'm going to sell my Axim X5, sell my dell DJ mp3 player, and throw away my base model cell phone to buy this. I've waited 3 years for a PDA/phone combo to finally get it right.

Sprint has it as the PPC-6700.
I checked on ebay and saw the seller "sprintnetwork" offers it for $120 with restrictions. called sprintpcs since I figured I was due for a free phone. Asked them to match the ebay offer and was given $350 credit for phone service and the standard $150 rebate. still have to cough up $449.99($599.99-$150rebate) up front but not too bad after I sell my PDA and mp3 player for $250 on ebay.

👍
Thanks for the headups on this model. I kept looking at Treos since I figured PPCs would never get it together.

Treo 650. Take a look at the 700 too.

Get an unlocked phone from ebay. It's more expensive, but you can change providers whenever you like.

I've been thinking about this lately as well. I'm a long time Verizon customer and am very pleased with them. I think they have a "renew every 2 years" thing going on and I qualify for a $100 off any phone. I have 2 options:

1) Get the Razor phone for free (it's $99) and then buy a separate PDA off of ebay.

or

2) Get the new Treo 700. It's $499 through Verizon. With the $100 credit, I can get a Teo 700 for only $399.

I'm strongly leaning towards option #2.

I have an older hp 6300 cause i wanted to stay with t-mobile. Bad move.
Everyone seems to be having fun with the treo 650. most of my classmates say they prefer the palm program over windows.

Treo 650 enough said (what I got).

but if your network provider offers at Treo 700 (I only know of Verizon that offers it in my area)...go for it!

I would hold of on the Treos for the time being. Newer/better versions are going to be released in the next few months (Treo700p) with some important upgrades (like more memory), which is one of the downsides of the current Treo.

You should check with your school as well to see what they recommend. Our school insists on Palm handhelds only so I got the Treo 650 instead of the 700.

How about the MDA from Tmobile?
My friends have it and they absolutely love it.

I have a Dell x50v (they now have a x51v) and use it all the time. It has 2 expansion slots for SD of CF cards. I've been able to add 3GB of extra storage (very useful for Up to Date). It also has Wi-Fi and bluetooth. I personally like that it is Windows Pocket PC based for transferring Word or Excel documents.

My preference is to have a cell phone separate from a PDA. No particular reason for that though. The Treos look very nice and I wouldn't mind having one of those either. I think the advantage of a stand alone PDA is the additional storage which I'm not sure the Treos have. I'm sure someone can correct me if I'm wrong on that.

I heard Palm is coming out with

TREO700p

It's been rumored for a while, but it looks like the latest news says it has a release date of late May/June. Not sure about the new perks, but I do know it has significantly more memory!

So if you're planning on buying....might wanna hold out.

oops- rereading this thread I saw someone beat me to it.

Also, if you buy a phone or a PDA with a memory card slot, make sure to check out Ebay for memory. I got a 1 GB miniSD and a 1GB Sony memory stick for about a third of what it would cost in a store or directly from the manufacturer. 🙂

Here is a link to the seller I bought from - shipping is expensive but when you are winning the item with a $10 bid you should expect to pay $15 for shipping (just a tactic for making you bid more). Shipped in a matter of a day or two and both of the items I bought were factory sealed and worked perfectly!

Treo 700w is out now and available with Verizon. Was thinking of getting this one. Any thoughts?

Sprint and Palm should be announcing the Treo 700p tomorrow morning. Right now the rumored price is about $600 or more. It may be cheaper if you take into account rebates, etc. These may only be available to new customers. The 700p version should show up for Verizon 2 months later. Cingular...who knows? Maybe 6 months or so from the info I've seen. I've been trying to hold out and get a 700p (Cingular customer). I think I may end up just getting a Treo 650. It has a great price and most of the bugs have been worked out of it. We'll see tomorrow.

no wifi on 700p!!!

I was really hoping it would have wifi, that would have been a really good improvement over the 650. Oh well, guess I'll get a 650 then.

Just looking at the specs and comparing the 650 and 700p, there really isn't all that much of a difference.

60mb of useable memory - I have a 1G sd card, so that takes care of that
EV-DO - Cingular user so I don't get that anyway
1.3 megapixel camera...don't care

The list goes on and on. There doesn't seem to be anything that will influence me other than the memory issue. But it seems that this is easy enough to solve. I'm pretty sure I'll have a 650 by the end of the week.

As tempting as Evdo is, I also think I'm going to pick up a 650. The price will continue to drop due to the 700p's release, there's a huge community backing it up, and then I can pick up an evdo phone/pda in a year or so when the bugs have been worked out and I'm confident that I can even get evdo access (the evdo networks are still very new).

In the medical profession, what is the benifit of having a phone with evdo? I'm not sure I fully understand its purpose.
