ON the same lines, what is the best pda to get?
This has been threaded to an ultimate point, do a search? The best one is the one your program buys for you.
But, I think the Palm Tungten E is the best value - you can get one, and a 256 MB memory card, for under $200 these days. The Tungsten E has a high-res screen, 32 MB of internal memory, is small and lightweight, good battery life (I charge mine once or twice a week), and interfaces with my email, has editors for Office files, etc.
If you need wireless at the hospital, get one that supports wireless, obviously - it will cost more.
There are more medical apps for Palms than pocketPC's. In particular, there isn't a free version of epocrates for pocketPCs. Pocket PC's typically have better screens than the older palms (not the current generation color screens), less battery life, are heavier, and cost more.
On mine, I have epocrates (free), JHU ABx guide (free), a bunch of other free stuff, Steadmans dictionary, Ferriguide, 5minCC, and a few other things. I also have more than enough room to load just about anything I could think of, after already loading a number of aviation, sailing, and search and rescue programs I have over 200 MB memory left. A 256 MB memory card is under $50 these days, it's very affordable to go overboard on the size and not worry about it.
Whatever PDA you get I always recommend that people get a full-size stylus (like a pen/stylus combination), the very skinny stylus that comes with PDA's isn't as suitable for most people as something full size. Also get the plastic protectors for the screen - cheap insurance if you ever forget to deploy the stylus tip on your combo pen. Cases are optional.
