PDA's

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I LOVE my PDA, but I use it for more than just dental school stuff. I feel my life is so busy that I'll miss things if I don't keep track of them. It has helped somewhat with D-school as far as noting when major projects are due, or when lab competency exams are, or when regular written exams are, etc.

I'm sure it will help when we start seeing patients.

to EHA:

A PDA is great to have. My sister picked up a Palm V back in 1999 when she was a 3rd-year at NYUCD and had been using stuff like Dental LexiDrugs and Griffith's 5-minute Medical Consult on it. Helps a lot in clinic.

It's also great for keeping track of your patient pool's contact information (phone number, treatment status, when they are due for a recall after you completed their case, etc.).

NYUCD's operatories are not really that spacious... I'd think a PDA would be easier to handle than a laptop in that environment.

Good luck come August!

Sony announced that they will stop Clie, some said that it would kill the market for Palm OS system. What do you think?

I have a Clie now and already am thinking about my next PDA. I kind of want a window based PDA because they come with office softwares and Microsoft Money PDA version is free to download! But lots of medical softwares are for palm OS.

any thought on this?

I don't think you will need a PDA until clinic. But they would be nice to have for keeping your patients and sched. all cleared up! Also good point on the drugs, but I bought a program, can't recall the name, but it gave contraindications to the drugs, but wasn't dental related, so I still have to drag out the ole drug book and look up the oral complications to them!

The thing I have found best with the PDA is whenever you are in one of those hygiene lectures and you are bored out of your mind, a good game of solitare always clears the spirit.

i have a tungsten C (got it in January on sale from 500 to 200--what a deal!!), it's good when I can pick up a wifi peer2peer signal in class and use it to IM people. It's also been good to play bejewelled and monopoly when class gets too boring. I think it would be best suited for the class.

to Organic:

Yeah I'm sad to see the Clie line go as well, seeing how I had excellent service from my SJ30 for the past 3 years.

I'm sure it won't be the end of PalmOS though, since it has been around for such a long time that there will always be a loyal following (kind of like Apple-- The computer brand that just won't die despite repeated assaults by Windows, heh heh).

What I want in my next PDA: A smartphone with PalmOS but with a BIG screen so I don't have to squint. I don't think I should hold my breath though..

UB Tom: Handspring has a great smartphone! Check out the Treo 600. I have been using mine for almost 6 weeks, I love it.

I'm considering to get a PalmOne Trea 600 as well from AT&T. Is this phone just like a Tungsten series in features? I also plan on subscribing to Tarascon's Pocket Pharmacopoeia for drug references. Any of you using the Tarascon Pharmacopoeia instead of Lexi-Comp products?

I used a Palm PDA's during my entire undergraduate years. Initially, I had the Palm Vx before upgrading to the m505. Recently, I was give a Tungsten E as a gift from my fiancee.

While researching apps that may prove useful during dental school, I found the following sites geared toward dental students and professionals.

dentalpda.com

Don't get a Treo 600, they're known for problems. There's a new treo coming out shortly that's a little smaller and should be a bit better.
