Howdy y'all!

After a cluster of trying to get all my away rotations scheduled, I find myself redoing my fourth year schedule. Since I'm having to redo it, I may as well try to give myself extra interview time. So...

When is the busiest time for interviews? In other words, when should I schedule my vacation/slacker rotations?

Thanks and take care,
Jeff

December or January. I fell like taking a vacation month for one of them is the best because you can bang out a bunch of them. If I hadn't done that I would have had to sprinkle them throughout Nov-Feb.

Yea, do what I did... do 4 interviews in one week. 😉

i'd say december, although last year x-mas and new year's came mid-week, wiping out the last two weeks for interviews. late november and early january were also busy. last week of january and early februrary had candidates canceling left and right

I went on 9 or 10 interviews, did 4 in November, with 2 or 3 in Dec and the rest in early Jan. Dec/Jan are the heaviest times to interview. Get off for December so you can enjoy the holidays with you family.

Q, DO

🙂 I just noticed that you have more posts that Quinn. How's that possible? They not working you hard enough down there?

Definitely take Mid December - first week of Jan off... good relaxation time and you'll get a second wind. By the time you hit the trail again in Jan you'll feel like an old pro.

Here's a strange question...do EM programs interview on the weekends or are the interviews offered strictly on weekdays?

Okay here's another quick question...when do interviews in EM typically begin? I've heard answers anywhere from early October to mid November (depending on which faculty member I ask)!?!?!

Also, my school doesn't release the dean's letter until Nov 1, but I've heard of programs sometimes giving interviews to applicants before they even receive the deans letter, as soon as the application is complete on ERAS...any truth to this?

I received several interview offers before the dean's letter was released. In fact, I received a couple offers before ANY of my letters of recommendation were in! The point I'm trying to make is to make sure you turn your application in the first day ERAS allows you to do so. Don't wait until everything is ready before you submit your application because it might not get reviewed.

I've heard of some interviews in late October, but most are late November through early February with the bulk in December and January.

Good luck with the match!

Its a good point to get your app in early. The east coast (NY mainly) starts interviewing a little bit later... first of november an does heavy interviewing in Dec/Jan to mid feb.

if you can work it, put your cush rotations/vacation in dec/jan.

How flexible are most programs with interview dates? Do they typically interview on multiple days of the week?

Is it at least more flexible than those for medical school?

Thanks and take care,
Jeff

Most programs interview two days per week. Some interview one, others three days a week, and others on weekends. This is where getting your application in early becomes crucial, because scheduling can be difficult due to each programs set interview schedules - especially when you factor in days needed to travel.

Jeff,

I found interviews for residency to be a bit more flexible than med school interviews. You are usually presented with a list of dates in your invitation, then you call or email the program to schedule. There was only one school - UT Houston - which "gave" me the date I was going to interview.

I also agree with getting you ERAS application submitted ASAP after the service starts accepting them. I got some interviews in September, the first about 3 days after submitting my ERAS app.

Good luck with everything and hopefully will see some of you 4th years on the interview trail!

E.P., MD 👍
