Came across this today, thought I'd give others a shot. Here's a puzzle for the therapeutics smarty pants

Why did a physician's sig call for "5-4-3-2-1 dosing" of the combined oral contraceptive(COC) Ortho Novum?

Hints:
- It wasn't a mistake
- It wasn't a mistake for Medrol (but it was similar dosing)
- The PT has taken this regimen this way before
- I know the answer and I'll post it after some people get a chance to use their noodles
- I didn't say the PT was a girl
- I didn't say the PT was a boy
- I didn't say the patient was pre- or post- childbearing age
- Assume nothing other than what was stated
- Final hint: 5+4+3+2+1=15 (didn't want anyone whipping out their calculator)

They were being treated for chronic gastrointestinal bleeding of obscure origin?

Nope, not what I had in mind. Any other takers?

Looks like a taper to me.. Maybe for abnormal/heavy bleeding for a woman who does not need hospitalization. Just a guess.

Is that the alternate regimen instead of using Plan B?

I thought that at first but I've never seen a 54321 I've seen a 4+4 and stuff like that...

I hope dude comes back soon. I'm going to think about ths far too much
Yeah, I've never seen a tapering one either, but I have no other ideas.

Hmm... the fact that these are "hints" make me wonder if it's a transgender patient or veterinary patient. Or both

I have absolutely no idea what the physician would be going for. Even in a transgendered patient. Or a non-human patient. I am curious to see if this is some new cutting-edge regimen, or just something a physician made up that makes no sense.

Five BCPs in one day would make most people :barf: . I'm curious myself what it's for.

I think the patient is a bride-to-be who wants to delay her period until after the honeymoon.

From what I've heard, patients can generally just skip the "off" week and start their next pack. Usually they'll miss the period, might get a little bit of spotting. I'm referring to monophasic OC here, not sure it works with the bi/tri/quad phase OCs.

Some people were correct with the major symptom but not the disease. PCOS is the disease, severe bleeding and hirsutism are the major symptoms. Nice job!
