I forwarded this article to a pediatric anesthesiology fellowship director who has no applicants this year hoping that it brightens her day. Unfortunately the strong job market seems to hit pediatric fellowships the hardest. 🙁

Hopefully it will lead to an even better job market for pediatric anesthesiologists in the future and the tide will turn. Another obvious way to attract fellows would be to pay them more.

A few years ago the peds anesthesia job market was really tight (for half to full peds), and now it’s great - which is good because it allows for better job mobility. I make less than most full time generalists for sure… but my work truly brings me joy every day because I know I’m helping kids and because the environment is so positive. That said, I’d be even happier with a raise.

I think it depends on the location/job/situation. The pediatric staff at my shop earn more than the generalists by quite a bit. Granted we have pediatric call on top of our adult call (which is less than what the generalists take), but we get paid for coming in on pediatric call as well. In the academic world, where you would get to do close to or 100% peds, that number will usually be less than for most private practice generalists, yes, but on the whole that type of job is probably more enjoyable depending on the politics of the department.

Is there a way to see which programs have filled outside of the match already?
