Pediatric Board Certification 2013 Advise

Hi Anyone passed or passed after failing boards? advise? failed my boards this year and need all the advise i can get.. i work full time and have 2 toddlers, so time is precious for me...I just want this exam to be behind me.....I did read LOW, Prep 2008-2012, did med study course but no luck..I failed by 20 points;(

I am so sorry. I was in your shoes last year. I also have a family and am in a fellowship. I wrote out my study system in the thread "how I passed after failing the first year". Hang in there. It helped to have my husband on board and taking our daughter when I had to study. Pm me if you have any specific questions. Get the pediatric board review book. It was very good.

Have not passed yet ..failed by 7 no..studied medstudy DVD,prep 5 yrs questions, medstudy 2012 and 2010 questions...improved from last time...I am really sick of this test..feels that I am really stupid.
Do not feel like starting studies....looking for study partner..on phone.at least can plan and discuss..

I recommend spending more time memorizing as much info as you can in LYW. Doing 10 years of PREP questions wont help you very much if you arent very comfortable with the info in LYW.

I was suggested to use this forum by a fellow resident. I am beginning to prepare to take my Pediatric Board exam for the first time this October. I have asked around my program, but was wondering your thoughts on the following:
1. What is the best pediatric board review book to use?
2. Which have you found the most success using?
3. What is the best pediatric questions and answers book?
4. Does LYW stand for Laughing Your Way to Passing the Pediatric Boards?

felt like my situation. now last year of time limited eligibility, so scared and hard to come out of depression. Planned last year way ahead, did medstudy review course, studied cover to cover medstudy 3-4 times with 5 yrs of Preps, few chapters from Laughing your way like GI , syndromes, metabolic cuz had done it before...worked part time for 3 months...scored 171 !! if fail again..will loose eligibility..means will loose every job..very scary situation!! any advises??

Please read the thread "how I passed the boards after failing the first time". I followed the study system of the op (mostly) and wrote out my own. I passed with above average score. Put away medstudy. I don't think it's a good source. Look at PBR, very high yield. That was just my 2 pennies.

Start studying early... Most important thing is to do PREP questions - just do them over and over again, and learn why the wrong answers are wrong. It helps to do the questions first by timing yourself while you answer. Then see what percentage you got correct WHILE being timed.
Your goal is to get 75% of PREP questions correct, if you want to pass.

However, I have used this book and it really was not that great. Fellow residents have bought the book only to return it as I have.

I would definitely recommend using this book or titles from this company

1) OSki pediatrics is pretty good
2) same
3) prep by a mile
4) yes, I think that book sucks though.

I really feel for you. My best advice is not to spread yourself to thin. Stick with one book> Medstudy doesnt help. Get a nice reveiw book like Oski. Do PREP 3-4 years but mainly focus on the content specs. Everything you need to know is in there. Focus on the big topics like growth and development ( look at the growth curves), nutrition, NEO, ID, development and behavior. Those are the money making topics. Why would you spend 2 - 3 days reviewing metabolic only to see 2 questions in your test?! Once you master these topics then start doing the rest. It worked for me, even though I scored less than the mean in the rest of the topics. I am not saying not to review the rest but seriously focus on the big picture. For other topics like pulmonology or rheumatology, also think big, focus on asthma CF, JIA etc. get the point. Best of luck. You will be fine.
