Is there any benefit to applying to a joint pediatrics/derm residency as opposed to doing a derm residency and a pediatric derm fellowship if I'd like to pursue a career in pediatric derm?

Also, does anyone know if ped derms have the same type of hours during residency and as practicing clinicians that general dermatologists have?

Thanks!

CK

i think in a joint program you train to become certified to practice both pediatrics and dermatology, but in a dermatology residency followed by peds fellowship you are only certified to practice dermatology, albeit on both adults and kids.

I think joint programs like these are best if you want to be in academia specializing in zebras, breaking new ground. It'd be a waste of your time (and talent) to be seeing common everyday things that a Pedi or Derm alone can diagnose or manage.

There aren't that many joint programs like these out there anyways. Maybe the nationwide appetite for these kinds of docs out there is only but for a handful.

Thanks for the advice. Anyone else have insight? Anyone who is considering pediactric derm, derm, or peds?
