Pediatric EM Rotation (for MS-4)

I am interested in doing a pediatric EM rotation, and am having difficulty finding an adequate amount of locations to apply to.

I would preferably like to go somewhere driveable from where I live (i.e. Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas.) Other benefits that would be extremely helpful include provided housing & meals (or a good deal.)

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

My first choice was Children's of Dallas, but I hear that it is extremely competitive to get into.

Not within driving distance, but Yale-New Haven Children's has a good student rotation in pediatric emergency medicine. It's difficult to get into as a visiting student though.

It's closer than Yale but still not super close, but Emory has a pediatric emergency medicine elective if you're at an American MD or DO school (not 100% sure about DO but think so).

Also Childrens Hospital at the University of Colorado. Did the rotation as a fourth year and loved it. Plus it may be a little closer to you.

another option if you want to get some basic procedures and obtain some experience managing sick kids would be a PICU rotation.

personally, i would recommend this more than a peds ED block primarily because peds ED, even more than adult ED (from my experience), is a lot of treat and street of basic stuff you've already seen during your peds rotation. you'll get your DKA's and traumas and such, but the yield for "cool" stuff (IMO) is lower in the peds ED than in than PICU.

maricopa county medical center in phoenix and
phoenix children's hosptial both have peds EM rotations for 4th year students...at least they did in the UArizona elective manual. good luck.

I am about ready to do a rotation in the pedi EC. You won't see trauma but you will see EVERYTHING else and people are nice here.

As a med student, i rotated at DuPont in DE. There are some amazing attendings there and some very strong residents (Christiana residents rotate here). There's also a good diversity of pathology. Not sure what the deal with housing is at this point....last I head they were not offering housing due to renovations.

Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville, KY. If you are willing to go to Missouri then take a couple hours more and come here. It's a stand alone children's hospital and has an excellent ER. Contact the Peds program here for info.

Do PICU at SFH they take students pretty often and you'll learn plenty - they see good pathology, like to teach, and meet some kids on arrival in the ED. Save your money.
