Surprisingly I'm digging the pediatric cases in my forensic elective. Our coroner is rather permissive and will have her deputies do just about anybody who requests it, so I've seen some interesting pediatric path - not just the coroner-case types. More interesting than the 1000th nursing home fall/MI/bleed.

Is there a pediatric path fellowship? If so, are these guys in demand, or no?

Sure there is demand.. just move someplace with high infant/minor fatality rates...

Of course I still plugged it into google

http://helfersociety.org/Fellowships.htm
But they look like fellowships for Peds docs, not pathologist.

Two of the docs who ran last years conference are pathologist.. they might be able to give advice (but neither seem to be Peds-forensics pathologists)

Yes, there are pediatric path fellowships and they are pretty easy to get.

But no, they are not in demand.

Man I read that whole thing and thought he ment forensic peds path. (clearly I did from my last post)

What Cameron said is correct, not in demand. It is a large academic/peds hospital only sort of thing...

Pedes path is kind of a niche field. You limit yourself to academics if you want to use it to any real extent, and there is a separate board exam for it. I suppose the major fellowship programs (like Wash U with Dehner) are competitive, depending on who applies that year, but in general if you want one and you express interest you could probably get it. I think a lot of academic places are always looking for people to do pedes path, but as with anything else if you do research and bring in money you will do better.

I don't know how common this is, but the Pedi Path fellow at my institution this year has a private practice job lined up where she will do general surgpath and serve as the group's pedi specialist.

Yeah, there's nothing about a peds fellowship that prevents you from doing private practice, but it's just not going to be a huge selling point with most places. There aren't many (if any) private practices that would be actively seeking a peds path person.

Pediatric pathology is undoubtly one of biggest wastes of time ever concieved of. If you were living in a hovel in Long Beach, huffing paint fumes and surfing for the rest of the day, your resume would look better than with that little gem on it. Yes I exaggerate BUT there is absolutely NO reason to do one now. These programs are pure ARTIFACT from the days when most pathologists came from military service and had done their training on bases and were then a menace when they had to go out and practice in the real world without any pedi exposure. That isnt the case now and consequently the entire pedi path fellowship world should likewise go away.

Actually, peds path is warranted from a scientific point of view - not to mention the fact that doing peds autosies is quite difficult (personally, I hate it. Too damn small, not to mention the macerated cases). But I agree that it'll basically only be in demand from academic centers and the like, and not likely to make you rich as a rock star.
