I am currently a D2, and will be applying for residency programs in the next couple of cycles. Therefore, I have done a lot of research into schools and how to be proactive about building a competitive application. However, I seem to not have a lot of information about the importance of research. I understand some schools prefer it and others do not see it as a requirement, but are there any apparent trends? I do not necessarily have an interest in doing research but am very passionate about becoming a pediatric resident at a program, and will do what is necessary. Maybe, some current residents can give insight about their experience?

Doing research for any specialty can only help to set you apart from the other applicants. The best programs are going to be the most competitive and your competitiveness comes from the strength of your application. If you have the opportunity, I would pick a research project related to your field and do it. I know a number of people from my class who applied to peds, not everyone did research, but I know someone who did and she received interviews from some of the more competitive programs.
