Hi all,

Wanted to poll the community on this question - is anyone who did general uro or otherwise, but NOT pediatric fellowship, practicing pediatric urology at all? I am planning for a career in andrology/male GU recon, but wondering if it would be possible to see circ/circ revisions/scrotal lumps and bumps/baby hernias in addition to my adult practice. Is that kosher or against the rules? I know if other countries for example, the endo guys are doing all the pedi stones.

I think it will depend on your geographic location and the hospital where you practice. Most urologists are probably comfortable doing circs, circ revisions, straightforward orchidopexies, stones, etc. on kids. If your hospital allows you to operate on kids and you have the right equipment, go for it. However, you may find significant administrative barriers on the coasts or near cities where there are pediatric specialists and children's hospitals nearby.

Secondary issue that makes me limit my pediatric practice --- majority of the kids walking into your clinic are not going to need surgery. You are going to have to slog through a lot of neurotic parents obsessing about the circ, bedwetters, retractile testicles, etc to get one or two fun little cases. To me... not worth it and one of the reasons I didn't do peds uro in the first place.

Thanks for the comment. Great point regarding logistical/administrative issues.
