Hi, I was just wondering if there is much work in pediatrics that vascular surgeons do. Is this additional training or included in the vasc surg fellowship? What type of cases do they do and is there ever enough at big centers for someone to do just peds vasc surg? (I'm guessing the answer is no but wanted to hear some other opinions...)

Thanks.

Peds vascular is more common than peds OB and peds geriatrics ... but not by much. For one, kids don't have 40 (or 10) PY smoking histories or longstanding diabetes. At my program - large research & referral center with separate children's hospital/Level I Pediatric Trauma center, I have seen/heard of very little peds vascular pathology. Lap belt injuries to the aorta along with other trauma are the main issues.

Vascular surgeons do very little work with pediatric patients. Most of the pediatric vascular work is done by pediatric surgeons. Vascular is part of pediatric surgery fellowship training along with pediatric thoracic and pediatric hepatobiliary and pediatric oncology surgery etc. The pediatric surgeon is the last truly "general" surgeon left.
