Hi
I am really good with children, I feel like I can understand them and can manage them pretty well. I even taught grade 9 for a year. I would like to know what you need to do to make yourself competitive for a Peeds residency. It is a specialty I am interested in.

I have a 3.55 GPA, Im a D1, I am probably ranked like 40/90.

Downloaded it from internet.. dont rely on it but see if you may find it useful.. esp. IMGs
I hope you realize this is all relating to pediatric residency for medicine......USMLE scores

I hear you wanna aim for top 20. I'd work on improving your rank, since you are sitting on the bottom half of your class' rank.

Peds is not as imposing as some would have you believe. Your rank as it stands will get you into a program somewhere. You should focus on getting the most pedo experience you can at your school, and you will need a great letter from the Pedo chairperson or another faculty member who is well known in the Pedo world.

As a PD I’m sure you have more insight than I, but based on the 10 people in my 2018 class who applied to peds, grades definitely correlated to admission, with no one in the bottom 2/3 matching.

Class rank changes a lot. You can't really be sure of your chances until after second year. Not looking too bright tho...Focus on your grades first and foremost (duh).

Keep in mind that different programs have different requirements, which can often change with a PD change. I have seen all types of applicants admitted to lots of different pediatric programs over the years. Grades count, but may not be the deal breaker you think they are,

After going through the process of applying and interviewing this past year I agree that grades aren't a deal breaker 100% of the time but it's more of an uphill battle if you have not done well academically, which is true of all specialties. I will note that I think this plays less of a role the further you are out of school. There are a variety of attributes different programs look for in applicants, some programs are more willing to overlook a not so impressive academic history than others.

I would say personality overall may big the biggest determinant for an applicant for pedo residencies. Which is something that would be judged during an interview but to get the interview you better stand out on paper somehow.

The culture of the program, something not reported on the websites can play a big role. If the PD has a great interest in high in service test scores and hi board passage rates, then high grades a a demonstration of future high test scores will be at a premium.
