Greetings! I recently completed part 1 and ended up at 87. I'm fully aware that this is pretty low to be considering a post doc program. Currently I'm in the top 10% of 65 students and hope to keep moving up in the next 2 years. Based on these two factors, am I competitive enough for either pedo or dental anesthesia?

Also, my class is the 1st dental program for our school, and we have yet to establish the various specialty departments on campus. So it's near impossible to do research in any of these fields. I feel like this could potentially hurt my chances of gaining acceptance into any residency. Is research a MUST for one to consider a specialty? Thanks very much! 😀

I would say you are definitely in the ball park for pedo. Why dental anesthesia?

I'm interested in dental anesthesia because I've heard nothing but good things about this area of dentistry. Most programs provide training with special needs patients, as well as sedation for peds. This seems like a valuable tool to be able to offer. Looking at it from a business aspect, there's hardly any over head involved, and one can go to pretty much any kind of dental office to provide the service.

If you're seriously considering anesthesia, there's a DA on dentaltown who is extremely friendly and helpful regarding his career decisions, practice, training, etc. He practices in the New England area.

If you're a convicted sex offender then you should avoid Pedo and go for dental anesthesia. Plus, you can do whatever you want while the patient is sedated if that is your cup of tea.😉
