A pediatric dentist is a specialist dealing with primary and young permanent dentitions as well as special needs and medically compromised children. Most general dentists won't see children younger than 5yrs and most general dentists can competently treat the routine cases which tend t comprise approx. 70% of children. The amount and extent to which GP's treat children depends on the school the dds graduated from and the amount of predoc. pedo. experience he/she received. Most GP's do not have much experience treating disorders in the mixed dentition and or pedo. oral path. Interceptive orthodontics is another area where GP's lack. Many GP's don't have a good understanding of space maintenance and when to/when not to use it. Even more important No dental school I know of gives experience in sedation of children to dental students, therefore, except for those GP's having GPR experience they do not know/nor should they attempt to sedate a child for a dental visit. Pedo. also do surgical cases in the Hosptial O.R. where the child is seen under general anesthesia. A GP' (except for GPR grad.s) cannot get hosptial privaleges to do this. In my residency, we treat children with ALL, Static Encephalopathy, Spina Bifida, Down's Sydrome, Epidermolysis Bullosa, various cardiac problems, seizure disorders, SLE, etc. Most GP's can't remember their path. well enough to treat these kids and are glad to get them out of their chair and into a pedo. office. The age group that is most likely to visit the dentist is 5 - 17 yrs old. Seventy-Five percent of all children seen by dentists are seen by GP's there are not enough Pedo. to see them all. Not only is Pedo. a much needed specialty there are not enough.
