First post...wondering if anyone had heard about this.

it sounds like the kid was an asthmatic but had no other major health problems. i have some friends who are techs at that clinic and they say that there's one attending anesthesiologist and the majority of cases are done by dental students (including intubations).

this somewhat surprises me more, to have so many different people other then anesthesiologst performing anesthesia. l know US lacks of anesthesiologsts, but when there is a obvious bad system, there should be something to do about it, rise your voices higher, this is going towards a breakdown.....

Don't know the whole story so it's hard to place blame on any one.

Everyone blames anesthesia what crap hits the roof. Always "anesthesia" related death.

VCU is a pretty big place. I doubt they would do "general anesthesia dental cases" in a "clinic" So there's always a media fastination with anesthesia related death when most often times, the anesthesiologist is not even present. Were the dentist sedating the kids themselves.

Like to know more of the story before we jump to conclusions. Kid probably spasm coming out of anesthesia. Whether it was sedation or general, no one knows with the article the way it was written.

These are dental student giving GAs, with all anesthesia drugs and intubating patients. This is a "dental anesthesia rotation." They call them "fellows" see this. www.adsahome.org.

Dentists in our town do all sorts of crazy things....remi infusions/propofol in kids/adults, etc.

That's what happens when inadequately trained people push the envelope. When they get the 1/1000 or 1/10000 complication they cannot rescue the patient that we probably could have. If that's what happened, with their "anesthesia fellows" they should get crucified and serve as an example to others doing this madness in the name of cost savings.

Sevo, your facts are not correct.

I'm a dentist myself (now a medical student), and I attended a school that had a dental clinic equipped to provide general anesthesia--much like VCU, I gather. I can assure you, there is no way in hell.....no way in hell that they'd let dental students touch a GA case. The only thing a dental student might have been taught (and I stress the word "might") is how to start an IV.

Everyone is just speculating. We don't know what happened so why point fingers at anyone. Thats what the media is for.

I question if this first time poster is a CRNA just trying to stir the pot...
