I'm going to be starting a Peds ID rotation next month. Any suggestions for textbooks or qbooks I can use to review before/during the rotation? I'm planning to do micro case files and the antibiotics section of Lange pharmacology. Any other ideas for how I can prep?

For something more intensive, but will later be a decent reference (knowing that all medical texts age quickly, though. Maybe you can find a library copy)

What you are planning to do sounds pretty solid.

Now, if I were to do it again I would do the following:

1) Pull out PREP questions from the last 3-4 years that had to do with ID (I think there was a simple way to do it with the CD's).

2) I probably would have read through the ID chapter in Zitelli's. The text seemed to give a good overview from a diagnostic standpoint.

Otherwise, I wouldn't do much more. Granted, I went to a small program, but I remember most of the ID consultations consisted of first line Abx choices before the C & S came back, or alternate choices when the bug was resistant to pretty much everything (which is why I think reading the lippincot chapter is a good idea).

Have a copy of the Red Book handy. Also, at some point in the last few years they published a Red Book Atlas which has good synopses of the most important infections and great color pictures. It's also a lot more portable than the Red Book itself and isn't that expensive from what I remember.

PREP are questions put out by the AAP that try to cover all the learning topics put out by the board. They consist of multiple choice questions with sometimes lengthy vignettes. What helps though are the explanations they write out for each answer. I learned a ton going through them during residency and when I studied for the board. A good place to find out more about it is here:

I wouldn't buy it though, as most pediatric programs have them for you to go over. Since they tend to categorize each question by subject area, it is usually pretty easy to pull out the few questions dealing with whatever peds subspecialty rotation you happen to be in. Hope you have a fun month!
