Hey everyone,

I'm a third year student going into Ophtho, possibly interested in peds ophtho. Does anyone know if it's possible to do a pediatric internship year instead of a medicine, surgical, or transitional year? If so, where would I find a list of available programs? Additionally, what are the top programs for peds optho specifically? Out of the best programs (Iowa, Wills, Basom, etc...), which offer the best peds training? Thanks

I personally know of a resident who did just what you are suggesting. She did a general pediatrics intern year. I think you would have to scramble into a program that didn't fill in and offer your services for one year only. This may be risky and difficult to do unless you could get it pre-arranged. I am not sure about what Peds fellowship is best however. Also, you must consider that unless you are sure you are going into pediatrics, doing a IM/TY internship will give you better broad training for treating patients of all ages, which you will be required to do throughout your residency at least. I am currently pursuing a pediatric ophthalmology fellowship at the University of Iowa and it is simply fabulous, lots of handson experience with amazing pathology.....Being an FMG I have to repeat a residency in the US for my board certification and have already matched for the same, I would be doing an internship in Pediatrics at the same university as there was a pediatric prelim track available, although rare some universities do offer this track which I feel would be extremely beneficial for you if you desire to pursue peds ophtho as a career....Do let me know if you have any further questions.....

I am also seriously considering Peds Ophtho or Peds/Neuro combo.

It might be good to do a transitional year instead of Peds because a majority of your training for the first 3 years will be with the adult population, so you need to know about these patients as well. Also, you might change your mind.

Since I am geographically tied (I stay here 1 year, my husband follows me for 3 yrs) and there is no TY out here, I'm doing IM.

I don't know about fellowship programs yet, but I am hoping to get some guidance since my program has a lot of Peds Op there. I think CHOP might be pretty impressive...

Thanks for the input, and I see your point about doing the TY instead...I do wonder if doing a peds year will put me at a disadvantage when treating adults as an Ophtho resident. But on the other hand, kids really do have a unique brand of diseases, and it probably would prepare me much better to understand pediatric diseases. And yes, it is possible that I will change my mind, but I really enjoy the pediatric population as opposed to the adult. Do you think that if i knew that i wanted to work with kids, it would still be a bad idea? Doing a peds internship year doesn't really seem like a popular idea, so I wonder about the wisdom of doing it instead of a TY. Thanks for the input

Depending on where you do it and the flexibility of the program, I think a TY will give you a significant amout of peds experience while also exposing you to adult issues. Some programs have a LOT of elective time...

I am in complete agreement with Kassie that doing a TY will give you the flexibility of treating both adults as well as kids and moreover TY is less exhausting than a peds internship and you can customize your internship with peds electives, for me the decision was very easy as I had already spend three years in peds ophthalmology (one at Jules stein and two at uiowa)... from my experience peds internship is extremely beneficial and at this point I can concentrate on the things which I know would eventually be important for me as a peds ophtho attending like peds neuroradiology, peds neurology etc....BTW I matched at University of Louisville for both peds and ophtho residency, u of iowa does not offer a peds prelim track......With my experience I feel if you did peds internship you would be at no disadvantage treating adults during your ophtho residency as you would be dealing with a set of totally different diseases and would have no problems identifying most of the ocular manifestations of systemic diseases......

That sounds perfectly great.......when you sign up for nrmp match you can search for the programs offerting peds prelim year, I am sure you can do that by searching on FRIEDA as well but that search would be more exhaustive.....the easiest way to go is once you are close to applying for internships sign up with nrmp early and customize your search accordingly, you can search for multiple specialties according to geographic preferences as well.....hey good luck buddy, peds ophtho is a wonderful branch with amazing scope atleast for the next 10 years for sure......
