I was wondering if anyone has any advice about applying to programs who have Pediatrics/Psychiatry option. On Freida, there were only 8! So my questions are...what is the residency like? Is it competitive to get in?

Also, are there programs who don't have this specific combination listed but who may be willing to tailor a program that combines both for just one resident? Is that too outrageous to hope for?

Thank you for your answers; it will really help me out.

hi, i'm guessing u're looking at the triple board program. i believe there are 10 with a new one opening up each years for 6 years. they start up competitive but most people including myself choose either psych or peds, not both. they are mildly more competitive than general psych and peds seperately, but that is more due to the reduced number of spots than an overwhelming desire of people wanting the program. programs generally much more malignant than psych at the same institutions, but ease up after 2nd year. good luck getting a program to tailor 2 residencies for you b/c new medicare policies have made that virtually impossible without the institution coming up with the $ to pay you after the 3rd year. hope i answered a few questions for you! 😱

Any idea how competitive they are? Would an average board score and average grades (but good 3rd year grades) knock you out of the running completely?

Average board score won't hurt, but boost ur app with great LOR's. If location is not a problem for you, then you'll do fine. For those looking for location and best reputation schools, it's somewhat tougher.. I would say Brown, Pittsburgh, Cinncinati and Mt.Sinai are the more appealing programs, so it's not as easy. Do an away elective. As the previous post said, most ppl end up going one way or the other.. career wise, u'll most probably end up doing Child Psych.
It's advisable that you have a back up in case u don't match in triple boards. Don't limit urself in terms of ur back of programs b/c there are no guarantees, and you can have really positive feedback but still not match in triple board programs. Personally, not sure if it's worth it being boarded in 3 specialties, going through that whole process.. but if u really have a passion for it, go for it and best wishes! PM if u have any other questions.

Thank you for your advice and I will certainly PM you in the future if I have more questions. Good luck with your career!
