Hello everyone.

I'm a MS III at USC who has basically decided to have kids and adolescents as a patient population. I've also enjoyed my surgery rotations more than my primary care rotations.

Now, it's a decision between Peds Surg vs. Peds Ortho vs. Peds Uro, it seems.

The problem is: I tried research in various fields (both non-medical and medical) and have never enjoyed it; even clinical research. My CV consists mostly of community and teaching activities. As the three fields above all require fellowships and are probably intensely academic, I'm wondering what my chances are for securing the residency, then the fellowship. Any advice on someone who doesn't particularly like doing research? (I don't mind reading them, just doing)

I've also heard that Peds Surgery is the most competitive fellowship out there...is this true?

Thanks.

Interest in ped surg has plummeted in recent years & it is no longer one of the most competative positions. Applicant #'s have dwindled to almost a 1:1 applicant to position ratio. The competition for the top programs is still high, but there is a fall off after that.

There is however, a HUGE demand for pediatric surgeons though...lots more jobs then trained surgeons

Thanks for the info.

In that case, would it be best to enter a residency in an academic center vs. community based if one intends to do a fellowship? And again, how much would research (or not having done any) count for that?

BTW, what is the path to peds ortho? How competitive is it?

The hardest part of peds ortho is getting into an Ortho residency first. Peds fellowship is not that difficult to obtain once you finish an ortho residency. There are more fellow spots available that their are people wanting to go into peds.

Good luck.
