***Penn Class of 2012***

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For everybody going to the revisit weekend, did you sign up for the community service project part? I'm not sure which one to do, although it looks like Puentes de Salud is full already. Any thoughts or ideas on what we'll be doing?

Ben -- I signed up for the Sayre program. All the programs seem pretty cool, so I just kind of closed my eyes and picked. It looks like one of the others involved a lot of work with kids, so if you like working with kids, go for that one. If you're into community service, I don't think you can go wrong.

I'm doing covenant house because I like working with kids/teenagers. They all seem great, though!

Are you guys staying all three days?? I don't want my paycheck to take that kind of hit.

I decided to try to Puentes waitlist and see how it goes.

That's what I've been thinking about, too. I want to be able to see as much of Penn as possible, so I think I'll just do all 3 days. I hate requesting that much time off, along with the other revisits. This decision is so important, so my paycheck will just have to suffer...

Hey guys,

Uh huh, that's right, I followed you all the way here! I'm such a stalker.. 😛
Anyways, I was wondering if any of you guys knew when orientation started for Penn? I"m still keeping the hope alive that I might get off the waitlist, so just in case that happens, I want to be back in the country when orientation starts, heh.

Thanks!

And congrats again, have fun in Philly! I once again recommend the El Vez blood orange margaritas 😉 Mostly for people who like drinks that are sweet, fruity, and strong. Have a blast!

According to the schedule, orientation is "March 24-15 Monday-Friday Orientation (First Year)"!

EDIT: Just wrote the admissions office to ask. Will update when I know.

before the status page changed, it used to have that timeline of events. classes begin August 11 but I think the first week is orientation?

I can longer find that useful timeline...

by the way - does anyone know when we get our PennKey?

March 24?? uh...what?

Thanks, I'd appreciate the update!

Yeah, their dates are clearly messed up. But just based on it saying we start on the 11th, and 2nd years start classes on the 18th, and orientation is listed as ending on the 15th (15th of what, it doesn't say), I'd guess orientation is Aug. 11-15 (Mon-Fri), then classes start the next Monday. Also, the way it's ordered on the calendar, the "March 24-15" is between the May 15 one acceptance deadline and the Aug 15 White Coat Ceremony listings, so that seems to fall in line with the rest.

I think I'm going to go for the whole preview weekend, too. I'll probably get in late Wednesday night and stay with a friend.. otherwise I'm waking up really early to get down from Boston in time for the community service stuff (I ended up signing up for Covenent). Thankfully I have a lot of vacation saved up, although it does mean less leftover they have to pay me for when I leave...

My flight leaves hellsa early from Boston on Thursday. I either have to go to bed at like 8 pm on Wednesday or just not sleep.

I'm either training or driving.. haven't decided yet. Although at >$3/gallon, the train is probably cheaper.

Train is so easy and worry free. The 30th street stop is also really close to campus and you can also take the blue or green line to campus!

LUCY's a good option on weekdays...takes you right to basically everywhere on campus.

Me and another SDNer are staying at the Inn at Penn for the Wednesday night...perhaps we could meet up there?

I'm arriving Wed. night, but I don't have a place to stay so thought I'd go home (suburbs of Philly). Any current students want to host me for Wed night...?

I'm not a current student, but I can most likely host a couple of people if they're coming in Wednesday night.

I'm a teacher in Philly this year, and I live in Old City (near Independence Hall). Two non-teacher roommates (3 BR apartment with two couches on the first floor and two inflatable mattresses).

PM me to get a facebook link.

😀

This would just be for Wednesday night, because I'm not sure what'll be going on in my life the other nights...

Congrats to all of you! Penn Preview will be a blast - I hope to meet many of you there. In the meantime here's our match list from this year.

Sounds like fun, but it will depend on what time I get in (and if I drive or take the train). Let me know where you'll be and I'll try to meet up with you if I can.

I'm so excited...I get to go to Penn Preview!!!!!!

I signed up for Chinatown. Did most of you guys sign up for the Saturday night (Dr. Helen Dickens) dinner? Also are most of you staying the night on Saturday? Just curious.

I signed up for the dinner but I doubt they'll let me go since it's for underrepresented individuals in medicine and those who are really interested in minority health issues. Yes, I'm staying Saturday night - I really hope my host doesn't get tired of me!

haha yeah, I'm feeling the same way about the host situation. I'm not so sure about the saturday dinner because I am also not an URM. I guess we'll find out more info about it in an email?

I signed up for the Saturday dinner too. It looked to me like it was honoring minority achievements, but it was for everybody. But I could easily be wrong.. hopefully they'll let us know beforehand -- I'd feel kind of awkward crashing it.

afraid they'll chase the white males away? 😀

Hey all,
So I was talking to my friend who also went to penn and has siblings there now and apparently w. philly is getting worse. Maybe because the economy is getting bad?

Anyways, if you can afford to live in Center City (or find a roommate), I would recommend it! And, try to find a doorman building.

I have been teaching high school in southwest for the past two years, and things are not getting worse. They are getting *better*. Check your sources...No offense, but it's precisely this irrational fear of the unknown that creates a lot of problems in the first place.

Nutter is trying to make some sweeping changes. Increased subway service, cleaner buses, etc. etc. Three major contracts are up for renewal, the teacher contract, the police contract, and the firefighter contract. In other words, this August is going to be a huge battle, and I'm pretty sure things are in place for some bold improvements.

I'm just sharing what I learned. Take it however you wish! 🙄

I just got a congratulatory email from the faculty member who interviewed me! How pleasant!! 😍I am lovin' them even more now... if only he could have told me like 12 weeks ago 😛

I got one of those today, too -- it's a nice touch. Of course, the more I'm reminded of how much I like Penn, the more impatient I'm going to get over the next few months.. But this waiting is much better than the pre-decision anxious waiting 🙂.

I called and they said August 11-15 is orientation, so during the first few days of classes.

Ari

This is what the status page "Academic Calendar" says, I guess they fixed it:

August 11-15 Monday-Friday Orientation (First Year)
August 15 Friday White Coat Ceremony (First Year) 3:00 pm
August 18 Monday Classes Begin (First Year) 8:00 am
August 25 Monday Classes Begin (Second Year) 8:00 am
September 1 Monday Labor Day - No Classes

So it looks like actual classes don't start until the 18th? I don't see why they would have orientation during the same time as classes...

I believe they have a retreat before classes start so the class can bond (if I remember correctly). I believe there are some other activities also

5th year MD/PhD here... Happy to answer questions. I'm not a cheerleader and happy to answer any questions with an honest opinion.

BTW, the real cheap way to come from Boston is to take a chinatown bus from Boston to NYC then switch from NYC to Philly. That's about $45 one way 😀

Also, how is West Philly getting worse? It gets better every year as far as I can tell. More and more Penn students elect to live over there cause rents in CC have been going up tremendously in the past 10 years or so.

I'm a cheap man. I am headed to Penn Preview from Boston, but certainly not willing to spend the cash on a flight. I'd be happy to split gas if someone wants to drive from Boston. I don't care which days. Otherwise, I will probably bus it with Greyhound - that´s a $50 roundtrip if you stop in NY. If any of you want to join me for an epic bus journey, let me know.

Indeed, although it's less than $45:
Boston-NYC I do every week and it's $15 one-way. Lucky Star is nicer/more reliable than Fung Wah, btw.
Philly-NYC was $10 in my undergrad days, and can't have increased that much. The P2P bus is a little more expensive but takes you straight to 30th St station (but Penn Station/34th in NYC, which is not necessarily an advantage if you're doing back-to-back chi-town buses).

So more like $50 round trip.... I'd guess it's an extra 90 minutes vs. doing it by train, depending on how long you wait in NYC.

If I end up driving (still not sure.. either that or the train), I'd be happy to give you a ride. I'd probably leave sometime late Wednesday afternoon, and then come back sometime on Sunday. And I'd probably have room for one more, if anyone else was interested.

So for those of you already committed to Penn, when you think you'll move to Philly? I'm wondering how long I should give myself to settle in. July 1 or Aug 1? 🙂

Are you already in Philly? If so, you only need 10ish days...otherwise I say July 1.

Not to hate on Philly too much but I don't think there's enough to do here to warrant a month of "settling in." After a week you'll be bored.

I have to disagree with this. Philly's the kind of city where opportunities don't present themselves are readily as other cities -- but they're there. Center City has a great restaurant scene, nice bars, clubs in old city etc. When you get outside of that, up in northern liberties or exploring south st. and south of south, there's just so much more -- so many more great cafes, music venues and jazz clubs, galleries etc. I wish I had pure free time to get to know Philly even better.
