Hi -

I received a letter from penn dental in the mail. I noticed, basically, each year it costs 120k. That's half a million pre-interest. How do people justify going to these schools with that much debt? My only explanation would be many undergrads don't understand the value of being that much in debt. I just don't get it. I'm sure it's easier to specialize but 500k! What am I not seeing here?

Thanks

You're not seeing that other people don't see things as well as you do.

Some people also get the 40K scholarship which helps with the cost. I really liked the school but with no scholarship I’ll have to think really hard about it.

Only the elite go there. Low hanging fruit like me had no chance to go to such a magnificent school.

Okay jokes aside, Penn is a great program and opens many doors. They do hand out a good number of scholarships to students. Who gets them is a mystery.

I’ve heard from students they give out 1 (maybe 2) of the $40k merit based scholarships. The remaining 50 or so scholarships are $10/20k.

Only reason I could go is scholarship. If you don't get any financial aid or scholarship, you are insane if you attend. I'm looking at ~360k if I remember correctly...

The profession isn't as lucrative as it once was, but the cost is so much higher than back in the day. PENN better not ask questions about ethics in their supplemental lol.

Hate to break it to you but...

At least you can get a headstart! 😛

Another reason- Not everyone might have a state school so the cost of attending UPenn might be the same cost for all the other schools they get into.

I know people who passed TX school acceptances to attend penn. Not sure why BUT they are an elite program.
Also heard they offer scholarships

They charge that much because they don't want to end up like UW who fired(resigned) their dean and are in $36 Million dollars in debt.

...Please tell me the this is a joke. Texas people don;t know how good they have it. If I was from Texas I'd only apply to Texas schools. LOL

And many of their residency programs charge just as much.

The ivy league dental schools offer a lot of financial support. Harvard and columbia are big on need based (useless for me as international) and UPenn is big on merit based (awesome cause I’m international) but they also offer needed based (take into account parents’ income). It’s very competitive to get them but theres a chance. You attend because of school, connections you make, amazing professors and bright other students. Until I interviewed at Penn I wouldnt have known what’s special about an ivy. The curriculum is quite unique and the opportunities jsut feel a little more tangible or reachable. I absolutely loved visiting UPenn.

Would you say that all of the Ivy ***sparkle sparkle*** is worth potentially an extra $200,000 or more? Big Hoss and his friend Mr. Common Sense certainly don't think so.

Is that your justification of taking on that much debt? Most of what you said can be attained by most dental schools. I'm sure there is a certain appeal in the curriculum and facilities, but not worth that much money. Also, I wouldn't say the brightest of students would attend a half a million dollar school.

200K is not that much compared to the projected income

No definitely not worth extra $200,000. My personal max would be $30,000-50,000 max. I’m an international so i dont have the luxury of an instate and getting into some pure state schools that are cheaper is really hard. But I still think if possible and a student is heavily geared to academics, an Ivy League school is an awesome experience for dental school.

Indeed. It is a well known fact that Aspen and Coast pay Ivy League graduates 30% more than “regular” dentists. Most Ivy League graduates are able to leverage their pedigree into the most prestigious corporate gigs.

Curriculum, connections, match rates, Pass/Fail, the name or research opportunities. Not to mention Ivy league schools have a decent amount of money to give out, making it cheaper than other private schools
Except not Pass/Fail.
