Hi there, I have a clinical block open that I'd like to spend at home in PA and would like to do an externship while I'm there. I would really like to do an exotics only externship but can't find anything on the Penn website about visiting students (I go to Mizzou) and can't really find anything in the area (northern burbs) private practice wise that does exotics only. Alternatively I'd also really like to do a spay/neuter externship. I used to work for the Montgomery County SPCA and I know they don't really let students do anything really other than watch and suture. Any suggestions??? Where do the penn people go to do some full spays/neuters other than the teaching hospital??? I don't know anyone at Penn to help me out!! PM me if you have some specifics -thanks!

PSPCA (north Philly) has summer programs for vet students. They don't pay them but they get to do a lot of stuff, and I'm almost positive that they do full surgeries.

Radnor Vet clinic in Radnor, PA (west of Philadelphia) sees a lot of exotics. My foster bunnies go there and I love them. They do see regular pets but in the three times I've sat in their waiting room I've seen guinea pigs and a snake so I think they have a pretty heavy exotics load.

If you're more into wildlife you could check out the Schuykill (probably spelled wrong) wildlife rehab center.

I don't know anything about exotics at Penn itself; I get the impression that they don't do too much exotics work but I could be wrong.

I'm assuming you mean eastern PA; tell me if you meant western.

Thanks for the link PAVetHopeful that was exactly what I was looking for! There are plenty of places here in Missouri where I can get spay/neuter experience but thought that maybe spay/neuter would be easier to find in Philly than Exotics stuff. It looks like my best bet is to try and get into the special species rotation at Penn. Thanks Bunnity for the tip on Radnor - it looks like its a bit far to travel from where my parents live though.
thanks!
