I'm not too familiar with Ohio State's program, but Penn State has an exceptional training program.
Residents time is divided between the main Hershey Med Ctr site and the Lebanon VA (20 minute drive).
The attendings at Penn State are incredibly devoted to resident education, surgical skill, and overall career success. The atmosphere is very collegial and as "stress-free" as possible for a residency program. The faculty is also very supportive during the job/fellowship interview process. All of the recent residents choosing to pursue fellowship have matched with their top choices, mainly because of faculty support. Here is a partial list:
2009: (NYEE - Glaucoma)
2010: (Bascom Palmer, Miami - Glaucoma, Hopkins - Cornea, UC Irvine - Cornea)
2011: (Med College Wisconsin - Retina, Northwestern - Peds)
The residents typically graduate with about 130 primary phacos each.
