Ok, what is the word on University of Pennsylvania's General Surgery program? What has everyone heard about this program. Is it comparable to Wash. U's program with regards to producing top notch academic surgeons? What is the operative experience like for PENN Residents? Faculty (malignant vs. easy going)....any and all information would be greatly appreciated.

We've gotta get this general surgery thread going again. Its been quiet for a while (everyone has been busy interviewing I know). Lets start posting some feedback everyone on your opinions of the various programs you've visited to help out your fellow applicant.

I've heard that Penn is one of the most malignant programs around. There are lots of awful rumors and several were confirmed by a friend who spent some time there (before seeing the light to get out of Phillie).

Thanks for the input. If you would, please elaborate on the rumors you have heard and confirmed with your friend.

i work with an attending who trained there. lots of stories. including one where a resident was made to stand in the corner holding a retractor. yes, he was sterile, in the OR, apparently not retracting well enough, and had to stand in the corner for hours while they finished the surgery.

of course it is malignant.

to get in good, you have to be hand-picked as aresident to spend 2, 3+ yrs in the lab, then you get out and realize life has changed!

I thinik our current community trained R4s could school the R5s at the BIG places.

their secondary questions totally turned me off -- they are trying to screen out ppl who care about anything outside of working at HUP. One of the categorical interns dropped out this year after two months so I think they are extra sensitive,
