my bad if this has already been argued about...

is the university of pennsylvania referred to as "penn" or "upenn"?

I think they call themselves Penn Med. People do say Penn for short.

(The undergrad is definitely called upenn)

And on what authority can you make this statement as if it was an absolute fact?

Group_theory - who has never seen a t-shirt, sweatshirt, pants, windbreaker, shorts, scrubs, license plate, teddy bear etc. with the letters "UPENN" (undergrad or otherwise)

I was just saying that people DO say UPenn, at least for the undergrad. As for the med school, I'm not sure, but I've heard it refered to as Penn. For all I know, people may call it upenn too.

please can we not get into an argument about this? I think we had enough fun doing Northwestern NU vs. NW! 😳

UPenn website = http://www.UPENN.edu

We, meaning everyone I have ever talked to, have always referred to U. Pennsylvania as "UPenn" and sometimes Penn State as "Penn".

I guess both could be called Penn, but U. Penn. undergrad is definitely UPenn.

" PENN " all the way 🙂

I agree this is a trivial argument, but hey, it's the summer, it's hot, and I like wasting bandwidth and server space 🙂

Anyway, most* people at Penn refer to it as Penn (maybe because it is easier to say than UPenn). Undergrad consist of College (undergrad division of SAS), Wharton, SEAS, and Nursing. I've always used Penn instead of UPenn, as did my friends at Penn. Actually ... I think some freshmen do use UPenn (in order to avoid confusion w/ Penn State) ... but that habbit dies quickly as people don't care anymore whether it's Penn or Upenn or Penn State or William Penn University (of Iowa) or the State Penn (maximum security too)

*statement based on personal observation and not on a cross-sectional survey

Anyway, the school redesign its official logo a few years back to make the word "Penn" more different (heck, compare shirts from before and after the redesign - it went from PENN to Penn --> how much did they spend to come up w/ this brillant idea?)

Anyway, the summer heat and humidity is getting to me - or maybe I'm still recovering from a fun night - but I like arguing over issues that doesn't matter one bit - reminds me of many nights in undergrad =)

GO QUAKERS!!!! BEAT PRINCETON

This name debate is pointless. The real question is, have they fired Joe Paterno and gotten a real ball coach yet?

Paterno's at Penn State, not UPenn/Penn.

And don't talk about JoePa that way!

Is upenn the oldest medical school in the united states?

According to them. But I found that other schools had clever ways of saying they were the first, or the best, or whatever.

Hey principessa, while we're at it, can I be obnoxious?

Yale SOM is actually the Yale School of Management (don't worry, a lot of people in my class did the same thing)

Yale School of Medicine is YSM.

Anyway, it's awesome you're coming to YSM! Looking forward to meeting you. Are you going on MOOT?

Here at Penn State we refer to U of Penn as "UPenn" or "Penn" and our undergrad program as "Penn State", "PSU" or "State College" for those at the home campus. I've never heard the term "Penn" being used correctly to refer to JoePa land!

I'm from PA....typically, its a lot of out-of-staters who refer to PennState as Penn. I go to Penn (UPenn?) and i know I've had to explain to people who aren't from the east coast that Penn isn't the same as Penn State.

Ahhh..explains things. I remember when I matched a lot of people were congratulating me on getting into an "Ivy League" residency. Took me awhile to realize they were confusing Penn St with UPenn/Penn. 😛

My sister goes there and always refers to it as Penn as do all of her Penn friends, but all of my (and her) PA resident friends call it UPenn to avoid confusion with Penn State.

I tried referring to it as Penn a few times but everyone would always ask, "Oh, at State College?" And I'd have to reply, "No, UPenn, in Philadelphia." But even when I say UPenn people ask if I mean Penn State. So I've gone to saying, "the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia." That seems to work.

And my mom went to Miami University of Oxford, Ohio. I have to say that whole thing too when people ask or they'll think she went to the University of Miami in Florida.

Maybe I should just start telling people that my sister goes to Penn State and my mom went to the U of Miami. Easier that way.

Thats ok, my husband's parents still ask him how he likes it at Penn State when he goes to UPenn med school. Its hilarious. I feel this burning need to correct them every time. Not because Penn is any better than Penn State, but because, well, the schools are as different as night and day... Scenic, rural State College vs. Filthadelphia... Not that they likely know the difference or care, since they are from Idaho, but still.

Oh, and congratulations on that MCAT score, Kaz!

Filthadelphia

Man, we PA folk have the best cities: Filthadelphia (first time I've heard that one  ) and ****tsburgh.

Now, I like both of these cities but they still have the worst nicknames 😀

Oh, and don't forget: Intercourse, PA or Blue Ball, PA (no joke, and I *think* they are both in Lancaster county). 😀

So many reasons to love PA!

There's a Beaverdale, Jugtown, and Stalker too. I think PA was a haven for the sexually frustrated colonists 😉.

Please note that the above response is one of the few that is actually from a Penn grad.

As a fellow Penn grad, the only thing I can say difinitively is that anyone (I've read at least two so far) who asserts that "undergrad is definitely UPENN" is definitely wrong. Not that everyone uses Penn exclusively, but it is NOT "definitely Upenn..."

Some might call it UPenn in an attempt to avoid confusion with Penn St. Some might just call it UPenn in general. My experience is that most just say Penn.

While I've also never heard anyone use Penn to mean Penn St, maybe that's a Big Ten thing (I'm from Michigan.) Either way, most people around here assume I mean Penn St. whether I say Penn or UPenn. Especially in the fall, I get stuff like "How can you be such a big Michigan fan if you went to Penn (or UPenn)?" 🙂

Oh well... My "Not Penn State" Tshirt still comes in handy sometimes, but it is mostly retired. 😀

They are in Lancaster Cty, along with these others:

Paradise (comes just after Intercourse on the highway - or before, depending on your direction of travel!)
Virginville
Fertility
Puseyville
Bird-in-Hand
Bareville
Mount Joy (or a variant for a less common name, Mount Carmel)
Mountville

and
Beaver Falls
Beaver
Middlesex
😛
