hi ya'll,

i was hoping someone could enlighten me about how the Penn waitlist works. I've heard some things about tier 1 and tier 2 waitlists. I wanted to compare notes and see what's true and what's not.

as word of mouth from an MS4, I heard that everyone on tier 1 gets in. it's only a matter of time. has anyone else heard this too?

i've already sent a LOI to Gaye Sheffler, but what else are other things people are doing to improve their chances?

i would appreciate any information you could give!

From my personal experience, tier 1 is the actual wait list. Just like how a regular wait list works, you have a good chance of getting in (maybe the top 30% or so), but not everyone gets in though.

Tier 2 is basically a soft rejection. People from that tier rarely gets in. The truth is, most schools don't send out rejections after you have interviewed maybe as a (cruel) way to keep your hope up. If you are on this tier 2, I'd say that start looking else where.

Yeah, chances of getting in off of Tier 2 are slim. And Tier 1 is not automatic. Penn has a lot of people get in off the waitlist (20-25% or so of the total class), but there is no way of knowing how many people are in Tier 1. One thing we do know if that the number is higher than the number ultimately accepted.

Here's a breakdown:

Some people were told that they were in the "top" of tier 1. I think these people have a very good chance of being accepted off of the waitlist.

Some others were told that they were just in tier 1. I think this is like the real waitlist at any school. There's a chance, maybe a LOI will help, good luck!

Tier 2 = Rejection. They don't reject anyone post-interview, but it's very rare when anyone comes out of tier 2.

this is the skiddle on this dilly, broken down straightup no softner:

Tier 1: Maybe

Tier 2: A$$ clown
