Penn

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
People can get on Penn all they want about their admissions process (and I admit that there are only a small minority of people doing this), but is seems to be a VERY popular school (at least on SDN) (judging by the number of posts and views).

400 posts and over 20,500 views in the Penn thread.

That is only surpassed by the "keeping each other updated" with 807 posts and over 46000 views and the "Acceptances: Class of 2012" thread with 595 posts and over 39000 views.

The next closest school specific threads are:
- Wisconsin with 217 posts and over 5700 views.
- CSU with 204 posts and over 9500 views.

Doesn't really mean anything, just something that I noticed. 😀

just an interesting thought about the last post. . . .

you also have to look at the demographic. maybe more of the "kind" of people that applied to penn are the type of people to know about or search for something like the forum to keep updated.

i'm not making assumptions, i'm just saying on a research level, a lot of factors are left out about your assumption stated above.

OMG< i sound like such a nerd.

but yes, it is also a very popular school. with good reason! 🙂

Hey sciencegal... while some people may disagree, the idea in your post totally crossed my mind as well!! for example, one of the schools I applied to takes a class of around 100, and all acceptances are sent out on the same day... yet only 4 or 5 people have posted their acceptances to that school on this website. That means the vast majority of their entering class doesn't use, or at least post on SDN! Not that this really means anything about the school or its applicants... Just observations.

To be fair, some of us view this thread (and occasionally post in it) for the entertainment value alone, without really having an interest in the school itself. This thread is quite the show.
:corny:

i'm not making assumptions...

Ok, you said you're not making assumptions, so I'll be nice. But that could easily be interpreted as rather derogatory towards those of us who didn't apply to Penn. There are a lot of us on SDN that didn't chose to apply to that school and are every bit as informed on the application process, vet med, and our schools of choice as those who did apply to Penn. Please, let's keep it nice and friendly. Because, as I noted above, those of us who didn't apply to Penn still view this thread. It would be an awful shame to have us coming away from here thinking Penn folks/applicants look down on the rest of us.

do any current vet students know how common this is and what people do on their year off? Is it really more economical than just working the extra debt of the year after you graduate? thanks, i appreciate any help.

I'm actually not a current student, since I'm in my deferment year, so I can't answer your question about how common it is. For me, it was a much better option than working off the extra debt the year after you graduate -- you're looking at an extra $40K over 4 years, being OOS, some of which will be accumulating interest during those 4 years. No matter how much you make after you graduate, you're still going to end up with a LOT more debt that way. Due to tuition increases, you'll probably end up spending an extra $2K or so in tuition if you defer, but that's nothing compared to $40K.

I would imagine that most people who defer either work in the field, or do research, during their deferment year. One of my biggest interests is research, so I'm doing a post-doc this year. I was hoping to get a weekend job as a tech somewhere as well, but I didn't end up having enough free time.

Some schools don't let you change residency after you're accepted, so I'm really glad Penn offers this option!

Or, you could interpret her conclusion as meaning that the "kind" of people who like Penn are neurotic? Control freaks? Tending toward OCD?

😀 😀 😀

(Don't crucify me, people -- I'm Penn c/o 2012! And wouldn't have said the above if I couldn't -- jokingly at least -- apply it to myself)

. . .back on topic.

anyone hear anything new? like would they still be sending out some invites this week? or is all hope lost?

Nothing yet.... not that I've checked my email compulsively all day already even though it's only 1:30pm or anything... 😉

also i should clarify. . .
i def didn't mean anything negative towards other applicants. if anything it could mean that penn apps are just more neurotic and obsessive. my point was, generalizations can't be made about a school, or its applicants, just by some postings on a website. it's like getting your news from only one source.

sorry if people took it the wrong way, I didn't mean to hurt anyone 🙁

i think we're all too sensitive because of this whole admissions/toture process.

best of luck to everyone

Another thought... UPenn has been sending out interviews since late December I belive? It seems that they have the longest most drawn out admissions process (which is fine if that's what works best for them), but that would be a huge reason why this thread has so many posts. It has been going for a looooong time. Just thought I'd throw that out there, I'm trying to distract myself from waiting for my TAMU letter, so please don't mind me! 😀

Yes... I was thinking along the lines that SDN may be more popular or well-known in certain regions, and also that Penn's admissions are extremely long and drawn out....

Not to mention that I look at this thread all the freaking time to see if anyone has heard anything! That's probably upped the view count by a couple thousand or so I'd say... 😉

hehe. . .me too!!!! 😛

i guess it kind of makes me feel like i'm doing something towards the "goal"
although it def isn't. hahaha

Of course, you could draw this out to apply to any people that obsess over applications on an online forum 😉 (I know I've been plenty neurotic about the admissions process!)

I'm still waiting as well, but might withdraw my application since I've been accepted to my in-state

I say go for the instate and withdraw the application 😀😀😀 of course my motivation for saying that (just like my response to people considering deferment) is completely selfish...

hahaha. that's why i refrain to responding to some posts like that.

😍

It's after 5pm so I'm assuming the waiting game is over for today... hopefully some news tomorrow!

Got my rejection today, right at 5:00. Just letting you all know.

i got my rejection as well..oh well, here's to reapplying next year(i mean this year)..

Sorry guys 🙁🙁🙁

Chordy, I didn't even think of that... next round of apps starts in what, 4 months? Insanity...

No reason to get too worked up over this 😀. I was only pointing out that Penn is very popular (maybe popular is the wrong word 😛) on this board (judging by post and view counts, not really any way you can dispute that, right?). Not trying to draw any conclusions, and I certainly didn't put down any other schools. 😀

no word from Penn today.

arghh I can't handle this prolonging of the inevitable!😛

i didn't hear from Penn today either.....i keep praying🙁

Does anyone know if theres a designated time between an interview at Penn and when they let you know of their decision...I interviewed on 2/29 and got an email 3/3 telling me i made a favorable impression and I was on 'Hold' status...does this mean they can just keep me hanging until they're ready to make the decision?

I still haven't heard anything from Penn either. So I guess there are at least a few of us stuck with this agonizing wait....

no word from penn today.

I'm guessing that's still a good thing for those of us still waiting? At least for the next 15 hours...

nothing from Penn again today for me either..

does anyone happen to have a clue on how many people they have already accepted during the past 3 or so months of interviews? & possibly how many they hope/plan to have in their class of 2012?

No word yet for me either. Haha, i'm not convinced this is a good thing... it didn't work out so well for people who were in this position yesterday and got rejected today... unless we're all just on a waiting list and as more people confirm that they will be attending, the more people they knock off the bottom of the list? That's my guess...

Cuvet, I think Cyrill (sp?) said they were informed that there would be around 130 students in the class of 2012?

nothing here either and it is my last hope for the 2012 cycle!!! Penn is going to be the death of me...

Got my Penn rejection this afternoon...which finishes up the application cycle for me. Good luck to those still waiting!

thanks shanomong!

does anyone, including those who have recently found out via email that they would be getting an interview afterall this month, know or have talked to Penn about if there are even any interview spots left? in the upcoming interview date, or whenever?

I'm still waiting as well...I'm convinced that's a bad thing. But we'll see! Any good news today (i.e. interviews)? It seems like there was none...

thanks shanomong!

I emailed but didn't get any response.... there's still the March 28 date left as in it hasn't occurred yet... but people have already been invited. I dont know if they're inviting any more. But supposidly according to SDN people who have spoken to admissions fairly recently, if we haven't heard from them by March 15 it's over. Which means by the end of this week...

Not to get anyone's hopes up (I debated whether or not to even mention this!) I interviewed on the last interview day of the season last year, and there was a guy in my group who'd gotten called the night before, inviting him to interview. I don't know if he got in, I don't know if there were special circumstances involved in his extremely late invitation, and I don't know if they've ever done that before or will ever do it again. But, at least it happened once.

Also not to get anybody's hopes up too much, but I just wanted to let you guys know that I just declined my March 28 interview today. I just got into my in-state and decided not to go to the interview. Hopefully one of you will get my spot!! 😀 Good luck to all still waiting!

thanks guys for your info!

didn't hear from Penn again today....i'm still praying!
any news for anyone?

congrats shuvball1 on your other acceptance🙂

no word here.

well, at least we only have 2 more days left of worrying, supposedly

I still haven't heard either. Trying real hard to keep hoping and praying with my fingers crossed...heres to it!

Nothing here either..............

Thanks shuvball!! And congrats on your instate!!

nothing here either...
i'm hoping for all of us

Rejected...Good luck everyone else!

no word from Penn today....looks like tomorrow is our last shot...🙁

nothing here either.

not to put a damper on things but. . . . i talked to someone at tufts today for my file review, and they asked about other schools i applied to. they said that i was the fourth person that they spoke to this week that has yet to hear from penn.

i'm thinking that's not good. . .cause that means there are a lot of us. and they can't give everyone a chance 🙁
