Pennsylvania medical license application asks for state / FBI records review

FBI says this is a 14 - 16 week waiting period.. if I match in March this would not give enough time... Any thoughts?

You'll be getting a training license. The timeline is much shorter. Once you match (wherever that is), the program will help you with licensing and any other onboarding needs.

Many state courts have a lower level of background check which you can do instantly over the internet after paying them for it. That was good enough for my PA license.

Yeah that's not right (or something has massively changed from when I applied for a PA license) - from deciding to apply, to submitting to the application, to receiving it, took like 3-4 weeks. As soon as they received the confirmation stuff from my med school and residency, they issued the license the next day, IIRC.

Can confirm the records check in PA is essentially instant; you fill out the form, pay them the money, and about five minutes later it spits out a result (at least if you have no criminal record, no idea how long it takes to pull data if there is something to be found).

Does that only apply to residents? I will be starting fellowship in PA in July and is unsure about this whole licensing. Help appreciated.

I think it is fairly quick for trainee licenses. Give yoursef plenty of time for full licenses at least 3-4 months- ive heard that the DO licensing in PA last year took almost 6 months for some people!

Ask your program. They will tell you exactly what you need to do.

You will need a full license if you plan to moonlight. But you could get that at any time if a training license will suffice.

Licensing in fellowship depends on your state and your institution. I have to have a permanent license in one state because they require it for anyone post-residency, but I have a training license in the other state I practice in.
