I hate to draw people's attention away from the MD vs. DO or Rank the COM's, but I was wondering if anyone could share what type of pen they like?

I'm been using Uniball Signo Gel RT 0.7 but find it sometimes a little messy. Thinking of switching to a 0.38. Does anyone have a favorite they could recommend.

My pens disappear, so cheaper the better.

Pentel energel 0.5mm needle tip

Really smooth flow, retractable, deep color, does not smear. I am the kind of lefty where almost everything smears and this bad boy does the trick. Took me actively searching for roughly 6 months before I found it. I will never go back to any other type of pen ever again (assuming they continue to make it).

You can find boxes of them for cheaper at other places like ebay and amazon (at least I have in the past); same with finding different colors.

Runner up would be the uniball micro 207 (0.5mm)

Again retractable, decent color and does not smear. But it definitely is not as smooth as the pentel. On some types of paper the micro tip tends to almost get caught or scratchy feeling. The 0.7 bleeds too much for me and the 0.38 tends to be too precise that it gets scratchy on most paper. The 0.5mm tends to be a happy middle ground but still way behind the pentel. Cost wise I think its cheaper than the pentel so that might make this more favorable for your situation.

**Again I am sure you can find cheaper deals elsewhere, I am just providing the link so you know what I am talking about haha.

My favorite pen right now is the Uniball Signo Micro 207 like @Awesome Sauceome said. It has such a pointed tip and I enjoy that because I am a stickler for writing small. But I agree about it having some mishaps when it comes to having a continuous line.

Will need to check out that pentel one.

Saucy, have you tried the Pentel Energel-X? Amazon product ASIN B005EE4UPSIt looks like maybe the cheaper cousin of your fave Pentel. I've never tried the Deluxe RTX, but I buy the Energel-X by the box in black, red, and blue.

Energel 0.5 is my latest favorite.

Used to use the pilot G2 0.5, which seems to be the 'official pen of the medical profession' to some extent.

Usually carry (I know this is overkill) 1 good rollerball pen, one crappy black pen (in case somebody wants to borrow one, patients need one etc - I don't care if it disappears as its cheap), and 2-3 colored pens to color-code my list for the day. And a highlighter.

Nice thread. A good pen is one of those things I've needlessly left myself chronically suffering without.

Got a pack of 3 Pentel's in the mail now. Thanks guys.

I'm a gel pen user, and it was really weird to switch to ballpoint to write in my first aid

Nice, and $1600 is the USED price! I had to look up the word 'nib', ha ha. Not sure where I would use this... maybe to sign a formal treaty between nations, then set it down right next to my oversized key to the city or gigantic pair of scissors for cutting the opening ceremony ribbon.

To the topic (great one, BTW): Pilot G2's all the way, but I can could suffer a Uniball Micro.

Whichever one I can steal from my front desk girls, without getting yelled at 😀

I refuse to use anything less than a Graff von Faber-Castell (https://chatterleyluxuries.com/product/graf-von-faber-castell-pen-year-2008-fountain-pen/).

I'm just kidding.. I use whatever the **** is laying around. No way I'm taking my expensive pens around patients.

I do love me some fountain pens. I have a couple ranging from super cheap to some graduation gifts that are more than I would spend. You're right about never using any of them in the hospital though.

Let's not kid ourselves here... I bet you wouldn't be caught dead in a white coat.

Pretty dress+ white coat+ pretty shooz = standard fancymylotus outfit at work 😀

edit. my white coat does have dr fancy embroidered on it, in pink. just sayin

I'm still working on all the freebies I have collected over the years, mostly from my grandfather who would come home from medical conventions with bags of pens. God bless medical conventions. I'm sure I have some pens with drugs that aren't used anymore.

I don't know if it's unprofessional these days to be a walking advertisement, so I typically use whatever I have that doesn't have a drug on it for CSEs, etc. Usually it's something like the Skilcraft U.S. Government pens. I have lots of those.

I don't think I'll be buying pens any time soon... I think I'm good for at least the next 5 years at least.

Click-tops.
I prefer Pental Energel 0.7 for studying. At conferences and the like, I pretend to be interested in the program and grab the pen, if it looks decent. I later test out my handful of free swag and keep the best 4 or 5, and ditch the rest. As long as they write well and the ink is solid and doesn't smear, and the pen isn't a skinny twig, I'm happy.

Pilot G2 0.38 are essentially the official pen of the house staff at my hospital.
I too am a fan of the pilot G-2 0.38, it's fine print is perfect for making small notes between the ledgers and lines of my sensus printouts.

uni-ball Jetstream 0.7 mm. Meant to buy the 0.38 mm pens, but I messed up when ordering.

You don't know what you're missing out on until you get yourself some good quality pens. I can never go back to those freebie **** ones.

it smears but I like pilot G-2 07 and Papermate InkJoy 300RT which doesn't smear.

Pilot vanishing point fountain pen

Don't forget to retract your pen before putting it in your pocket.

w8pKfP5.jpg

I'm a dork and rock a pocket protector

I like the pilot 0.38 ultra fine tip

And one muji colored pen

I literally just carry whatever cheap pens I can get my hands on. And I always carry 2-3 because and attending always "borrows" one indefinitely.

Pilot G-2 0.7 all day.

When I hit third year, I'm gonna carry two pens with me. One is going to be the G-2 and the other will be a ****ty pen with a thick ball that people like @SouthernSurgeon can "borrow."

Pentel RSVP BK90 Fine point

I keep about 5-6 pens on my breast pocket. My classmates think it's silly. I think I like to write pretty, colorful notes.

I keep pentels .38s in my secret inner pocket that I sewed into my white coat...this is sim to my "loaner"
