I have an interview coming up, and I was curious as to some of the various questions they asked you. This is my first interview so I am EXTREMELY nervous :scared: !!! Any tough or challenging questions you got asked? How did you respond to the question of them asking if you applied to MD schools...thanks for the help...anyone interviewing on December 9th?

Hi there,

It's been a few years since my interview, but one thing I surely remember is that my interviews were not challenging in the least. In fact, I've never heard of anyone having particularly difficult questions thrown at them at KCOM. Definitely be able to articulate your reasons for pursuing osteopathic medicine. That shouldn't be that difficult, though. Other than that, just prepare for a couple of good conversations.

The best advice I can give you is to be yourself and to know why you want to be an osteopathic physician (and why Kirksville).

My first interviewer basically had a list of questions that he went down. "What was your favorite class, why? Least fav? Why? What do you do for fun? What's your hometown like?" He didn't ask me anything about osteopathic medicine or why I wanted to become a doctor. He just wanted to get to know me.

My second interviewer asked only about medicine. Why DO, why kirksville, why medicine in general? Do you know what you're getting yourself into? Are you prepared? How do you know you're prepared? What would you do in situation X, what about situation Y? Tell me what you know about osteopathic medicine.. Where else did you apply? "I'm supposed to make comments about you on this piece of paper here. What should I write for where it says, 'is this candidate prepared? Is he a leader?'". That question about knocked me out of my seat.

Don't sweat it too much. Both my interviewers were extremely friendly. The first one liked to talk a lot and the second one was pretty much business. Just be yourself. Schools want to see individuals, not cookie-cutter premeds.

I don't know how to respond to the MD school question because I didn't apply to any. Just be honest is what I've heard, but I'm sure someone else can help fill you in on that one.

Hey chocotaco,

check out the SDN interview feedback if you haven't already. It should give you a feel for the interview.

I interviewed at KCOM last week (and was accepted yesterday 🙂 ). It wasn't too stressful and I'm sure you'll do fine. I got there at 8AM. 10 other interviewees were there that day.

First, we met at the office of admissions for a brief orientation. They had cookies, oj and stuff like that for us. We all went to a powerpoint presentation that outlined the whole DO program, the facilities, what is DO, life in Kirksville, etc. Then, at 9:00, they started taking us to our 1st 1hr interview.

I interviewed with a OTM professor first. That interview was kind of stressful for me. He asked questions like "what do you feel are the two most important ethical decision a doctor may have to make at this time?" and "how did you prepare your hands for the precision needed for OTM (WHATTT??? yeah, I know....). He also questioned whether my degree would be finished in time, asked about my low MCAT, any lower grades, what were my favorite/worst classes, any research experience, -- it was a little rough.

I don't want to scare ya though -- Everyone else said their 1st interview was really easy and conversational. My second interview that day was with a prof of pharm and his interview was VERY relaxed, almost stress free.

The final interview was 20min with an admissions counselor. First, Leah went over my file, then she asked questions like "Why DO" and "Why should KCOM accept you?" Def. take that interview seriously, even though it is again relaxed.

Other standard interview questions came up. (why do you want to be a doctor, ec's, etc)

Overall, the experience was good -- dress for the weather! You'll be walking to the TCC and the Gross Anatomy lab.

have fun, good luck

I interviewed last week. EXTREMELY laid back, overall. No advice except to know why you want to be a D.O. and why KCOM. Just be confident in yourself and you'll do great. And if you have to answer any tought questions remember that often what you answer doesn't matter as much has having a well informed point of view and being able to articulate your motivation for your p.o.v.
