Is anyone else bothered by the lumping of Asians and Pacific Islanders? Last time I saw a samoan... well, he didn't look anything like my chinese friend. If Asians and Pacific Islanders must be put together, then maybe we should put Arabs and Swedes together too. Or maybe we should throw native americans in with Asians too, since they most likely migrated across the land bridge from Asia.
All this lumping does is place one of the smallest minorities in medicine (Polynesians) with one of the largests minorities (Asians). Doesn't sound very fair to me. What do you think?

im 25% guamanian and 25% native american....
but my grandpa on my dads side was adopted and doesnt have any birth papers (he was the native american)
so im wondering how i can go about proving my minority status?
is stating 25% guamanian sufficient enough to claim this status, because that is all i can prove on paper...

I agree wi th you s-mart!! I never really understood why they grouped asain with pacific islander. There really is no connection between the two and i hated to be grouped or considered asian (no offense... I'm just not asain nor do i look asain) I myself 25% native hawaiian 25% samoan mixed with italian. According to aamc statistics, opi and native hawaiian are by far the least represented miniority in medicine as far as applications and matriculants are concerned (111 applicants only 33 matriculants in 2006). Surprisingly MCAT scores for matriculants of native hawaiian/polynesian were amongst the higher end for URM 9+ on all sections. Anyway I'm actually set on going to the carribean (i.e. ross) gpa is 2.7 overall( terrible i know) science is 3.67.... I think it would be hard to expain some of my F's and D's, but it is what it is (I played football in college and did't get serious until it was over ). ON a happier note MCAT on friday wooooooowhoooooo

Matt,
In my case my parents registered me as hawaiian on my birth certificate . If I were you I would try to register as guamanian. If you go to any polynesian festivals, (which there are many going on during the year in california), they have booths soley dedicated to that purpose. Hope that helps.

How do I find these polynesian festivals? Is there some kind of database or website I could search? I assume Sacramento doesn't see many of these...

s-mart,
I'm not too sure about the sacramento area but i do know there is a fairly large tongan community out there so im sure there has to be some around..... i would try and look in the phone book for any hula/polynesian dance studios in your area, they are ones that promote, set up etc. these events . The closest to you that i know of, would be san jose they have "tahiti fete" every year in july just go to the website. try http://pw1.netcom.com/~halkop/events.html. Also try searching "kao inoa", that is for hawaiian ancestery but i'm pretty sure they have some links to what you may be looking for.

:laugh::laugh::laugh:

i completely agree with you, but i lol'd at the bolded part.

honestly, if native americans migrated across the land bridge from asia, they're probably more asian than PI's. something to think about.

It kinda irritates me, as well. I'm Chamorro/Guamanian, I married a Caucasian guy, and we live in an area with a lot of Latinos. My kids look like a generic ethnic group--they seriously could pass for a number of different ethnicities. But sometimes I catch my own CHILDREN calling themselves Asians, and I get all, "we are not Asians, we are Pacific Islanders. Be aware and proud of your heritage!" To which they always answer, "but Mom, they always lump Asian and Pacific Islanders together, and it's just too long to say and hard to explain."

As of yet, there isn't a way to register as a native Chamorro the way you can register as a Native Hawaiian or member of a Native American tribe, but I've heard rumors that they are toying with the idea back home.

if they think we're stupid when we get into MD schools then I had to even ponder what they think about those poor black DO students.
