I have a real strong southern accent, its somewhere between Earnhardt Jr and Forest Gump (think country singer). In class one day after speaking up someone remarked that I had the "Countriest accent ever". Will this hurt me at interviews? My fiancé doesn't even think I ought to apply up north, she thinks as soon as my mouth opens the interviewers will view me as a "Walking, talking confederate flag". So, how do you perceive someone with a strong accent? Also, I've tried to speak "normal" and it doesn't work, I just sound real weird.

As long as they understand what you're saying, you'll be fine

🤣
As long as you're well spoken and can carry on a conversation you will be fine.

Nobody is going to reject you for your accent. If anything, they will find another reason.

Nah lots of people find southern accents endearing as long as they're able to understand what you're saying. As long as you don't have the opinions of a "walking, talking confederate flag" it'll be ok. If you do end up in the north and stay there, your accent will probably decrease over time anyway

Also, I read your post in a southern accent lol.

Haha I'm an non-Canadian international student who started learning English 3 years ago, but I got in. Don't worry!

Haha, sounds good. I know some people appreciate southern accents but I never spent much time up yonder in "Yankee Land".

Lol I definitely wouldn't call it "Yankee Land" to an interviewer but I think you'll be fine. Before you apply I'd just talk with your fiance about where you guys would ultimately want to live. Not sure how drawn you are to the north, but you may just end up applying only in the south and this whole discussion will be moot anyway
