Perio/endo externships where you get to do stuff?

So I performed a few crown lengthening procedures recently and my interest in perio is increasing a bit. Similarly my interest in endo is increasing at the same time. Still deciding what I actually want to pursue and I'm happy to take my time.

From what I gather perio/endo externships are generally not ones where you actually get to do anything. Usually just observe, sit-in on discussions/rounds and maybe assist. That said, if anyone has any personal experience are there any perio externships out there where the schools/staff actually allow you to see/do more than usual? I want to try to get the most out of these externships, otherwise I'd rather just hang around my own perio department where they know me and would probably let me do/see more.
