Sometimes I here people use persantine stress test and nuclear stress test interchangeably, but are they really synonymous? You can do a persantine stress test and just monitor the EKG (and no nuclear imaging), right?

When people use "persantine stress test," that usually means that thallium or cardiolyte - technitium based - is used (i.e. the nuclear part). I've never heard of persantine exercise stress test that doesn't use a nuclear tracer - it doesn't make since to me because persantine is actually a vasodialator.

persentine test is always nuclear test, but nuclear test can use either treadmill, persentine or dobutamine.

Persantine or Adenosine are essentially worthless without adjunctive imaging. The answer to your question is "yes"...if someone mentions getting a persantine stress test, it will ALWAYS mean nuclear imaging also.
