Hey guys,

i think there is a hidden psychology in having your own domain name for your email address so i was wondering what should my domain be. Say my name is John Smith

jsmith.com
jsmith.name
jsmith.me
etc and for the email

[email protected] etc

Which looks the most professional?

Do adcoms/employers etc care about the domain extention like .com vs .name or .me? Or does having a .edu domain beat everything else? I'm afraid my .edu email will be deleted when i graduate so i probably won't use that.

I have my own domain for email. I used [email protected]

So, to use your example:

[email protected]

I've had it for years because I like to have full control of my email, not because I thought it would be more professional. It occasionally comes up where people realize that I have my own domain for email, but it's usually in a "oh, that's cool!" sense.

Get a .com

That said, prob only secretaries and office workers are going to see your email address (if anyone even does). I don't think your email address is going to have a impact on your outcomes.

For business purposes, I suppose it might be useful in the future.

If at all possible, get a dot.com address.
 
Unless you have a legitimate reason for having one, my opinion is that having your own domain name looks more douchey than anything.
 
Do adcoms care if it is a top level domain (.com , .net , .org) or is a more niche one better like .me or .name which was made specifically for personal domains. I don't want them to think i have my own company which .com was supposed to be for.

Just get a dot com domain. I can't take .me seriously.

I totally agree here, unless you have your own business, or have CIA contacts that you wouldn't want google/yahoo snooping on.

Oh yeah, believe me, they care. It's .com or no med school. Just like they prefer boxers over briefs and shaved over da bush.

There's actually more to it than that. Having your own domain means you can exert more control over your email. This includes size limits, filters, access points, monitoring/advertising (or the lack thereof) etc... It's a relatively inexpensive way to be the master of your own email universe.

Unless you can rock something fancy like .gov or .mil, don't even bother to apply. 😉

Contrary to SDN belief, all med school decisions are solely based on the badassery of your email address. Choose something with flair.
 
Actually, declare your house to be an independent country and get a .gov domain name. That and the fact you are a president of a country will get you accepted. Though I can't guarantee if you will get a visa to the U.S and you will be applying as an international student.
 
when i got my post-rejection feedback from Loyola, they said they were about to send me an interview when they looked and saw my email address, decided I was unprofessional and wouldnt have someone with an email address like me tainting their reputation.

Follow up since my internet went out yesterday. I decided to register all of the domain extentions so any of the emails will work. That way if someone can't remember which domain extention they think i had and decided to guess, chances are it will get to an email i own.

[email protected]/net/org/me/name

Then i set up a forwarder for all of the emails to every other email so when you sent an email to .net for example, it gets delivered to every other email address. GoogleApps has a every nice system set up to do this, all you need to do is add the mx dns entry and then add the forwarder in the system settings.

If any of you guys need any help setting this up, lemme know.

seriously dude, you don't even know if you'll be one of the countless premeds that end up not applying. go take a few college courses and when you get close to your application season, then you're allowed to bombard us with these ridiculous questions.
