I am trying to figure out if I should keep my current PS that I have written. I was wondering if I could get your guys preferences on content. Do you think it is better to write about something that is little more unique and shows something larger about your character but relates less directly to dentistry OR is it better to write about something more directly related to dentistry but is pretty standard, a common topic, and pretty boring??

My current situation is that I wrote my current statement about being a congressional intern over the summer. I relate to dentistry a bit, but the main theme is basically self-realization. However, I could write about working at my mom's practice in high school, but I find that to totally convential and, honestly, pretty boring since it is a common topic.

I would go with boring and add a little of ur experience over summer, just my opinion

I agree with Hybridtavo, I would go with the boring story and culminate with how that experience brought you to Dentistry.

The ultimate purpose of the PS is to get an interview. How do you get an interview by being boring and blending in with the masses? Others' tendency to write on a common topic gives you an opportunity to shine. Use that to your advantage.

I say use the congressional intern essay, highlight desirable qualities of yourself, and briefly tie it to 'why dentistry?' Summarize in a few sentences, if necessary. You could always expand on the topic during the interview if they want to know more. It's more important how well you hold the reader's attention and how you develop your thoughts.

Experience as a congressional intern can be used to your advantage, but you can make it just as boring as the "pretty standard, common topic" if it takes up too much of your ps. Your ps should be about dentistry, how you got interested and what you have done to accomplish your dream.
