Hey All,
Its about that time again where newbies (like myself) are getting ready to apply for GPRs and such. However, I was looking at the website and it looks like there are no guidelines for the personal statement/letter of intent. Any ideas on what the AdCom is looking for?

Thanks in advance

I would ask the current residents at the programs you're applying to. Each program likes to see something slightly different that makes your application more attractive. Most, however, like to see something very well written that stands out and an explanation of why you want to do a GPR. Thats the major subject of most of the essays I've read. The ones that stand out are very creative and very well written. Think of it as a way for the Adcom to get to know you before the interview. Hope I helped a little :xf:

thanks...that was really helpful. when writing the letter, is it smart to include the fact that since you're doing a GPR in NY, you have to do a GPR no matter what?

Eh, i wouldnt put it that way. I would emphasize why you're applying to that particular program and why you want a GPR vs AEGD or something along those lines. The fact that everyone in NY has to do a residency, they're probably more inclined to want to see a very unique statement. It would help if a resident in NY would chime in.

good luck!

<-- not yet a resident, but I'll be starting this July (in NYC)

Don't forget to explain why they should want you, and not just the other way around. Tell them why you'd be a better selection than the next guy.

i think I'm going to do that, but I feel like I would be bragging, right? isn't that what the recommendations are for?
