Quick question, likely a stupid one. Is it necessary/advisable to write a separate personal statement for prelim/transitional programs? Thanks for your help

I basically just changed my final summary paragraph. Instead of summarizing why I would make a good radiology resident, I wrote a brief paragraph on what I am looking for in a PGY-1 year. Don't write a whole new one.

Just use the same one that you will use for the advanced position (i.e. rads, optho, etc.)...that's what I did. Prelim/trans programs already know why you are requesting a PGY1 position (as a bridge for your advanced position) so the same personal statement used for your advanced position will suffice.

Thats true, but it cant hurt to try to show some interest in the program you are applying for.

Along those lines, do you need separate LORs for your prelim year? I hadn't even thought of it until now.... genius!

Probably depends what the letters are that you are using for your PGY-2. If they are generic and apply to the prelim year then they're probably OK. But if they're all derm/ophtho/rads or something then you might want to broaden out a bit for your prelim year.

Thanks for the input regarding my original post. CTSurg, I think you can use the same LORs, unless all of them are too specialized like trouta said. However, some prelim programs, especially in medicine, require a chairman's letter, which is usually easy to get (just schedule a quick meeting). Good luck
