Hi,

Unfortunately it looks like I am going to have to reapply for the 2010 cycle. I need to rewrite my personal statement but I have no idea where to start. What should I include the second time around? Should I keep anything from my original personal statement? Any ideas on how to start it? Thanks!

I'm in the same position. I think I'm going to re-write mine.

I'm wondering the same thing... what to write!

It's difficult to offer some advice on rewriting a personal statement when I don't know what was written in the first place, but here's one thing you might want to try if you haven't already: Open it up with an exclamatory phrase or sentence. You want to get your reader's attention right away and keep it throughout the statement, and starting with some flare can help with that.

As far as content goes, just answer the question to the best of your ability. You can tell a story or use a chronological timeline to describe how you became interested in dentistry and pursued that fascination. If you are or were pre-med, go ahead and talk about it. Make sure you can confidently explain why dentistry is a better fit for you though. The point is to be honest and open. Be sure that the statement flows when you read it as well.

i'd say you only need to rewrite if it was not up to par in the first place. your reason(s) for pursuing dentistry probably have not changed, so just tweak your ps....

So your saying that if you made it to interviews re-writing the PS would be redundant? What about if you plan to apply to the same schools again, you think they'll remember or keep a record of it?

It might behoove you to update the ps with the changes you have made over the past year.

if you are going to reapply - try to do something and write about something NEW that will make your application different from last year. In english - show the admission committee that you did not just stalled in the year and that you made progress to improve yourself. Add that to ur PS.

Try to focus on what has improved, either on paper with grades or just in your life that makes you more suited to the pressures of DS now as opposed to last time. I know I took 2 years off and actually became alot better as a student in those 2 years getting a masters and am glad now that I am going into DS with this mindset. Focus on the good stuff and really try to let them know why your focus is better this time.

I've applied twice...
I had same question but my intention & desire to become a dentist did not change ( those were main contents in my personal statment )...
I was seriously considering Re-writing the PS but my first one was the best one I could come up with...
So, I was brave enough to submit same PS twice...
But I added little bit I've done for the past year & how it helped my application better...
Other than that, word for word... 90% of my PS was from last one I used...
It worked for me & I had 7 interviews...
I guess the most important thing is the Content of your PS...
