Personal Statement Help - Is there anyone that helps to revise them?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Mimelim, are you offering? I'm starting today. I have chosen to go the "just write" route. I have had some intense anxiety around this...so I know this will be a process for me.

Thanks - I searched Personal Statement, but that didn't get me where I wanted to go.

... You scrolled right past it.

why are you so mean all the time dude

Are you kidding?

Not only is he an extremely busy surgical resident in one of the most demanding specialties out there, he takes precious hours out of his day to come here and advise premeds that are sometimes lazy, entitled, or obstinate just so that they can get into medical school and have a chance to achieve what he has.

That's like the exact opposite of mean.

Anyone have experience with consultants or other hired professionals to edit / give guidance on your PS?
There was a thread on this not too long ago and the SDN hive mind essentially agreed that only a sucker would do such a thing when there are such good, free resources out there

why are you so mean all the time dude

O.O

Edit: Dumb questions warrant dumb responses. Nothing personal OP, but this is easily searchable. Also if you're going the "just write" route, I recommend going through several drafts and polishing your product before submitting it for any revision, otherwise the input you're likely to receive won't be of much value.

I went through my university's writing center. They had an online submission form (since I was an ecampus student doing a DIY post-bacc), and I worked with one girl on probably ten drafts. It was extremely helpful, and I recommend trying the same.

You guys are very funny. I'm not confused by the reaction to my thread, nor do I take it personally. If anyone chooses to get "up-in-arms" because of the way something is worded, have at it. 1) I am not a "typical" premed, whatever that means. 2) I do not feel entitled to help or whatever was suggested here. 3) I did search, couldn't find "the" thread I needed, so I asked for recommendations. I got my answer right away from Lucca, found the thread, so I'm good.

But...it was certainly entertaining to read folks assumptions about me from one line...

Just a friendly tip in case you're confused by the reaction to your thread - the way you word this sounds pretty dismissive of the people who agree to spend time helping complete strangers. Absolutely seek help in threads on SDN, your undergrad's writing department, a friend who is a good writer. But don't ask as if there is someone whose existence is devoted to helping you through your application. There are so many resources out there if you search for them, and if you want some individual help, I'm sure someone would volunteer if you show appreciation for the fact that they are taking time out of their day to do so.

A quick post is easier for people to read and answer. Of course, if I found someone to volunteer, that person would know that I appreciated his/her time. That part though, is between him/her and I. Thanks for the "tip" though! And, I'm still so curious how such a simple question is taken as dismissive...that's very odd to me. But, it must be the nature of SDN, so I can roll with it.

One person asked why you are so mean...I didn't take it as being mean per se. However, I did wonder the point of answering "Yes", if you were not going to offer any suggestions/recommendations for resources. Another, person said that you are incredibly busy, which I understand...so maybe your time would have been better spent not answering at all? Just an observation. Thanks for getting the conversation started though, I appreciate it.

You expended no effort to figure this out for yourself. I assumed that you wanted people to respond with likewise effort.

Hi, I'm the original poster, and I'm sorry that you find the question dumb...goodness SDN is an interesting place. Actually, for some, just writing, then having someone help you sift through what is there (find themes, etc.) can be very useful for some writers. It is a longer process, but can be fruitful in the end for some people. And, no, it wasn't "easily" searchable, considering that I did search before posting the question.

It is interesting the assumptions (stated as conclusions) made in this thread alone. My "tip" for you and others would be that this is not how medicine works. You don't see one piece of evidence and jump to conclusions. You have to dig deeper and ask questions. I only gave the information necessary to get the answer I needed, which was highly successful, by the way, because Lucca's response got me exactly where I needed to go...way before all the assumptions began...hahaha. I could have said I had already searched, and I could have said that I would appreciate anyone that would volunteer to read my essay. I could have also explained my reason for using the "just write" method. But, none of that was necessary for me to get the info I needed.

With that though...it probably would have been better for a couple of people on this particular thread to assume less in their responses - and ask more questions before getting upset at what they do not know.

Just an observation...

Not true, I searched before I posted this, but did not find what I was looking for. You expended useless time trying to teach me a lesson because of an assumption you made... I'm sure though that your tactics have been valuable in many other situations for many other premeds, so thank you for volunteering your time to help.

That wording was harsh and I apologize.

That's the thing though... it is. Very easily. You could have typed "Personal Statement" in the search bar and found that thread. Last year's is also stickied to the front page.

Given that you're asking for help with your PS to apply to medical school...I find you giving advice on what medicine is to a poster like mimelim to be laughable and just shockingly pretentious. I mean it's not THAT shocking, but I suppose that's another discussion entirely.

Also, "you have to dig deeper and ask questions" is a pretty fantastic piece of advice.

I don't even know what to do with this. The same type of thread is stickied to the front page.

Just an observation...

The passive aggression is strong with this one. My mother would be proud of your work.

At this point I'm just being argumentative so I apologize again. It's probably easier not to answer at all than to try to make a point on some of the inane questions that pop up on this forum on a daily basis.

I dont think he was really trying. And you are actually the one wasting time here trying to strike up some controversy in response to some assumptions made about you. Well it doesnt matter. What you were asking for is something searchable on the first page so im not sure why you are getting worked up here

Again, funny. My intention was not to strike up controversy. Remember, I only started with a simple question after I did search "Personal Statement". Maybe I overlooked it - I can admit that. But, since everyone on here has seemingly assumed my laziness, I took the time to respond to each comment one-by-one. Let us all reevaluate who started what before we make more ASSUMPTIONS. @NotWayneBrady - I really appreciated your responses.

In my responses, sure, I will take the "passive aggressive" title for some of it. I could have gone a different route, but I found the assumptions so ridiculous (better word - interesting?) that I just had to do it. It definitely added to the entertainment factor of this thread.

Also, I have not been around SDN (I may have been a member for a while, but I don't follow this website) enough to know who @mimelim is. This person seems to be somewhat of a celebrity (I've noticed that some folks are looked at like this around here), so my intention was not to slight the work he's done. Regardless of that fact, however, I am by no means afraid to write whatever response I feel is appropriate at the time - celebrity or not.

Lastly, I am a woman. MrsKrysJ. I'm much too old to continue on with you all, but it this was definitely an interesting read and I've learned a lot about this forum. In the past, I had found all the celebrity and "judge-y" type talk annoying, and maybe even a bit hurtful. Now, that I'm older though, I don't care as much (meaning, my feelings wouldn't be hurt if someone posted a new thread that said something like "Don't give MrsKrysJ advice because she is an annoying lazy excuse for a human being..." Hahaha. I mean that I will continue to come on here to say what I have to say/ask, and *GASP* maybe even give a bit of advice here and there because although I needed some help to find this one little thread, I do know some things.

So, thanks for the conversation. I look forward to speaking with you all in the future!!!! (No passive aggressiveness here, remember, I'm not personally offended by this. It one of the many things I've learned how to not be in my long, long years on this planet so far.)

@mimelim - You've obviously got some supporters...that's great. You have much respect on here.

Well, best of luck in your future endeavors! :luck::luck:

Okay, I think we've gotten little off track here. OP, your question has been answered and you have found the resource you were looking for. Arguing with people about assumptions that may or may not have been made at this point is an exercise in futility. Let's all cool down a little. Really, it's not worth it.

Moderator, can this be deleted at all. I did get the question answered a very very long time ago, so no need for it anymore.
