Hey guys,
So I had a little time over the break so I thought I would work on my personal statement. I haven't completed it by any means but, none the less I'd like have some people read and give me advice on it. Is there anyone on here that could do that by chance? Or does anyone know of any good sites that can help, that aren't too overpriced? I'm applying to both DO/MD schools, I have exceeded the limit for DO schools character count, but still have some room for MD schools. I"m really going to be applying to medical schools May of next year, but am considering applying to some DO schools after I take my MCAT in Jan that have later deadlines.

Your post probably doesn't belong in Allopathic.

You don't need to define hypothyroidism for fourth year medical students and doctors who are reading your personal statement. I think you went on too long about your childhood experiences, but I like the last paragraph because it shows what you learned from those experiences and the steps that you took to transform them into something positive. IMO, you should take out the paragraph about the kids making fun of you and how you were the kid who "didn't have any friends," etc. and instead talk more about your other activities (e.g., making the drill team, student government senator, undergraduate research, or your mentoring experience which would be huge on your apps). Also, you should talk about whatever experiences you've had in life to lead you to medicine, not just psychiatry. You're going to be learning a lot of things that don't necessarily pertain to psychiatry, so if you don't have much exposure or excitement for the other aspects of medicine, you probably won't be enthusiastic about learning the other 90% of material.

English tutor here, you can send it and I'll skim since you'll probably need to do a few drafts.

Agree with above. Saying you had no friends is saying you're unlikable in a way. I'm not saying that's the case but it's certainly not something you want to even begin to imply.

Don't do it; it'd be too late and won't be looked favorably when you have to reapply

Okay well that definitely wasn't my point, I was trying to explain how something that really did happen to me btw affected me later down the road. Thats really what I want to convey. But alright I will. And thanks

I can take a look at it, but not til finals are over (so Wednesday night) 🙂

You can send it to me, I am stuck in a slow lab job until I start med school next August so I have lots of free time at work. And I would wait until next year to apply to DO, you wouldn't get scores back until late February. You would be interviewing for wait list spots, if you get any.
