First off I'd like to say congrats to all of those who got in to their top choice schools!!!

Could you guys give some tips to those of us who have not yet applied about writing personal statements? I've never had great writing skills and have always had to work really hard at it. Would any of you reccomend those online services you can submit your PS to and get feedback (i.e. essayedge.com)? Has anyone ever tried this service or a service like it? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!!!!

I never spent money on essays.. I wrote out drafts and found friends and family that were good with writing to help me out. 🙂

Other SDNers are good resources too

Your university might also have a department (such as career services or alumni affairs) that can help you out. At my school we can get people to review our essays, CV's, resumes, and they even hold mock interviews for professional schools.

I'd look into that!

Your best bet is to revisit it many, many times...don't expect to write it over one weekend.
Also, have a bunch of people proof read it....family and friends are good, but sometimes you need someone either in the field, or who has been through the process to read it as well.

Hi:

I guess I can speak about essayedge.com because I did use the service. It was recommended to me by several friends who were applying to medical school. They all found the service to be excellent and recommended a specific reviewer for me (I’m terribly sorry, the name escapes me now).

I found the service very good and I think it has to do with the reviewer. If you do decide to go through essayedge.com, I would recommend you to find someone who has used the service more recently and if they liked their reviewer so you can request the same one. The reviewer I had was extremely friendly and gave me great suggestions on how to improve my paper. She did not rewrite it for me; rather she helped me with the content and flow of it.

In addition, I had several friends and family members read my essay including a counselor in my major’s department and another person in the career center at my school. At the end, you will be the best critic of your work.

I have told this story thousands of times, but I’ll tell it once more. I was on my way to the post office to send my application to several schools. For some reason, I decided to have lunch so I could avoid the line at the post office. Now, while I’m eating lunch I decide (for no apparent reason) to re-read my essay one last time. I had to unseal the envelope and everything. I almost choked when I saw one huge spelling error that neither myself nor the several people I have had read the paper before caught. I was describing my experience working with a blind and deaf student and I had written that I worked with a “death student”. 😱 Needless to say, I had to run back home immediately and I re-read every single word one more time.

Good luck!

 Yeah, it's pretty funny now that I think about it but I was going to give myself an ulcer when I first caught that. Good luck on finals!
