Personal statement - include or exclude desire to work with underserved

I was wondering if it may hurt my chances at some schools if I highlight the fact that I want to work with low-income, minority patients.

My PS is all about my work with several low-income, minority patients and how it has motivated me to pursue medicine and specifically has driven me to want to pursue treating underserved populations.

Do you think this may hurt my chances at some schools (specifically schools that are not in an urban environment and don't have a diverse patient population)?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Rural communities have lots of low-income people. In fact, I am pretty sure they have most of the low-income people.

But anyway, as far as I know, med schools love to hear that. But you should have experience that back that up & show a demonstrated commitment to whatever you are interested in. When you research schools, you will find that there are some that are more interested in "underserved" medicine than others, and a some have special programs related to that.

thanks! most of my clinical experience has been with low-income minority patients and i just didn't know if i should claim that i wanted to continue working with them as a doctor or just focus on the fact that i am motivated to be a doctor in general.
