I am currently trying to write my personal statement and am concerned that I don't have much to say. I've never worked for an optometry clinic or done much in the field besides shadowing a couple times. Any thoughts? I've just always enjoyed optometry visits and have always asked my optometrist about the profession. I did a lot of research to basically make my decision. So I don't have much experience on how I chose optometry..

Write about your shadowing experiences and how they led you to the optometry field, how you enjoyed your visits and how you were always interested in your optometrists job. Show that you are passionate about the field and that this is what you really want. Your personal statement doesn't have to be a super long story (you only get 4500 character limit) it just needs to show how your experiences led you to this decision.

Plus its never too late to start working at an optometrists office. I found my job as one on craigslist!!

Then just talk about how you enjoyed the visits and shadowing experiences. What qualities did the optometrists and environment have that you found appealing? If you worked or volunteered in any other clinical setting, you can also talk about that and how it demonstrates your interest in healthcare.

You can try to spin any experience and how it influenced your path to optometry. I briefly mentioned shadowing and working at an office (only one paragraph) and the rest of it were other experiences that I catered to influence a career in health care. There are some really helpful sample essays out there that you can also use for reference and try and use similar experiences to write about!
