Hey all! I've mostly just been a lurker here on SDN forever and I'm reaching out to you all for some helpful feedback on my outline of my PS so far. The theme I want to relay for answering the question "Why do you want to be a doctor?" is that I seek to make a difficult time/situation (poor health) less difficult. Eventually I am relatively sure that I want to practice rural FM (I am from a small town and most shadowing experience is with local FP doctors), but I am not sure how much of that to include in my PS.
Beginning:
Working in the emergency department, describe an example of working with a patient and their family after they receive the news that their condition is fatal. How I worked to promote a peaceful environment, provide the family with privacy, and learned about empathy through observing the physician's interactions with the family.
Middle:
Transition of how working with those families reminds me of when I witnessed my grandparent's health deteriorating and how the quality of care they received was my initial reason for wanting to go into healthcare.
Describe shadowing experience of rural FM physicians, possibly include story about tribal health clinic and what I learned about the physician-patient relationship and culture's influence on health. How the physician took the time to teach patients about their conditions and why their treatment plan was important for them
Link that to my experience as a SI leader for anatomy and physiology for 3 years. Came up with lesson plans/activities to help sessions of 60 stressed out students understand the content better.
End:
???? No clue how to wrap up a personal statement. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
Other experience options:
-Research: multiple summers of research internships which led to 2 poster presentations at different conferences; (how my pursuit of science can improve the treatment options available to improve QOL of the patient)
Volunteering in surgical waiting room, helping a woman who didn't speak english and for whom we did not have a translator available to find her husband who was in the hospital;
-Leadership: Started a club for Special Olympics on campus, led awareness campaigns, and volunteered at SO events.
